    Howdy,

I recently bought my 2010 V6 4x4 DCLB Tacoma and am looking into gaining the knowledge and know-how on how to modify and upkeep my truck. I've never worked on a car before nor do I have a lot of experience with hands-on mechanic-type work. I'm trying to build a toolkit that'll get me started but the trouble is I don't know what I should be looking to buy. I'd truly appreciate anyone willing to take the time to point me in the right direction. If you have any trusty tools that you love and couldn't think of working on your Taco without I'd love it if you could share!

    Thanks folks!

I'm a noob as well so I started with a craftsman tool set, torque wrench, oil filter wrench, big hammers etc. I also purchased military tool bags so my stuff is somewhat organized and it all fits nicely behind the seats of my reg cab.

Just off the top of my head for the initial basics:

    Haynes repair manual
    metric socket set
    metric wrench set
    set of screw drivers
    magnetic spark plug socket
wrench set (dikes, needle-nose, pliers, vise-grips, etc)
    oil drain pan
    shop light
funnels (for adding coolant, ATF, etc)

    shop towels
chemicals: anti-seize, medium locktite, di-electric grease, lithium grease

    And eventually:

    Factory service manual
    torque wrenches (foot-pound and inch-pound)
multi-meter (for measuring resistance and voltage)
    vise
    floor jack

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I got a 200 some piece Craftsman tool kit as a gift when I bought my first car. I would head on down to Sears or whoever sells Craftsman now and find a 100+ piece metric tool kit, hopefully one that is still US made. Anything else you can pick up on an as needed basis.

Sounds like a Craftsman Metric toolkit is the way to start!

I had no idea these were a thing! This is awesome! Thanks a ton!
