I get that, we're unfortunately past that. I don't care about the price of the service, I want to do the proper thing for the truck at this point. I want to avoid bricking the transmission. If it means a $600 service, I'm fine with that. It sounds like I need to do a drain and fill or a full fledged pan drop to avoid trashing it.

$275 would be Highway robbery for a drain and fill.
Despite what we might want to believe, these guys aren't sitting in your truck staring at a gauge and waiting for that magical moment.
If they have a conscience, they're getting the temp close, knowing it will be close enough..

Do it yourself if you can .drop the pan , have a new gasket and filter ready to go .
It's messy but not hard .
If you are making someone else do the messy work , follow up to make sure they did the job correctly

I'm nowhere near capable of dropping the pan on my transmission and def willing to pay a qualified professional to do the job. All I care about at this point is, it gets done right and the transmission isn't at risk of being bricked. If that means just leaving the fluid in there for life at this point, then so be it. All I care about is doing the right thing and having someone who knows wtf they're doing doing it.

Drop the pan and change the strainer at 60k
Do a drain and fill every 30k there after

This is what was recommended by a well respected trans guy, it’s my plan.

I paid 150$ for a flush at my dealer, and I supplied my own fluid. They ran 14 qts through it.

60k miles, and I immediately noticed cleaner shifting / no "torque converter slips."

I had already dropped the pan and cleaned it out/resealed etc.

The drain and fill is better than nothing but missing the torque converter.

I had the dealer do the fluid exchange at 49k and plan to do it every 20k. It gets all of the fluid.

removing and replacing too much old fluid with new can be detrimental. I’ll follow the advice of transmission specialists.
Drop the pan and replace the strainer at 60, clean the magnets, then do a drain and fill every 30k

That’s only true for the flush which uses
higher than normal pressure and also if you wait too long for the first fluid change (75k+).
Trans fluid is a high detergent and changing it late can cause more problems.

Drain and fill is better than nothing but you’re not even getting half of it.

I’m doing that stupid process on the power steering, sucking out the reservoir and fill with new…..you’re just diluting the old stuff.
again better than not doing it but it’s a bullshit method.

The exchange is via the cooler lines and at normal operating pressure.

This is what I have always heard for the last 30 years. It's like if you get to a certain point and haven't changed, leave it alone. What that number is, I don't know, 100K miles, etc. I'm going to talk to the transmission specialist that quoted me $275 and see what he was planning on doing for that money.

I've always heard a full drain and full refill with new fluid is like a shock to the transmission's internal components and next thing you know you've got a bricked tranny.

I'm about to do a 7,000 mile round trip journey to Sequoia National Park and back. I can't afford any transmission issues along the way.

Someone fact check this trans shop I just called, Apex Transmission -

I called them for a quote and he said he wasn't sure what type of transmission it was - stating "If it has a plug, it's a drain and pump" type of fluid change; if it doesn't have a plug, you drop the pan.

Just called Fred Anderson Toyota and asked what their procedure is:
-Service advisor is stating a "complete drain and fill" - no dropping of the pan.
-Asked her if they ever drop the pan or what factory guidelines are - and she stated factory guidelines are just drain and fill but sometimes depending on what the technician sees they may drop the pan - based on mileage/exact vehicle conditions, etc.
-Dropping the pan would be extra $ of course

So she's talking to a technician about my situation at 100K and will be calling me back to tell me what he advises.

It has a plug. However, if you're quoting him verbatim, it's more commonly referred to as a drain and fill.
That said, he may very well be pumping it, rather than pouring it.

So are you waiting for someone to tell you what you want done, or do you know what you want done??
