Yeah, I used to average in the mid teens with my WRX lol. Easy to have a lead food when you have a fun car.

I could average in the low 30s going over the mountains and back from Western/Eastern Washington if I babied that though.

This is what I did. My wife drives 30k miles a year. Got her a honda accord hybrid, bought a honda pilot for the weekends, and my truck is my daily.
With the gas savings from her previous suv we were able to get an extra car basically. It came out to like 80 extra a month for 3 cars.her tahoe already had 100k miles and was averaging 17 mmpg highway. God 60 - 80 dollar gas tanks every 4 days.
The hybrid can get 600 miles on 1 tank, and its like 25 to fill up right now. nuts.

Dude, the diesel version gets ~22/31 - it's a big difference. Actual reports from owerss talk about ~23 combined average and consistently 28-30mpg on the highway. As I know all too well by comparing gasoline and diesel versions of the VW Sportwargon, diesel doesn't help you at all in stop and go traffic but it gets substantially better economy at highway speeds, and as you mentioned under load. And that economy fall off that happens in our Tacomas between 65-85mph? That drop-off would be much less pronounced with a diesel.

I appreciate the sentiment, but that's yet another oversimplification. What about those that need a light truck for our work but need to be conscientious of our budget? The Taco has always served that person well. The OPs question is a good one, and it'll make sense for some people to pay more initially for a truck that gets better fuel economy.

Had a 2017 zr2 v6 , averaged 11-12 mpg, mostly city vs 2019 Tacoma now avg 14-15 mpg on same commute.

Not just mpg’s, build quality on the taco is by far superior

I know everyone thinks diesels are magic and have infinitely better milage, but in reality this is not the case. A diesel engine has a lot of torque down low and will get better highway milage like you said, but the trade off is top end power and much much worse milage in the city. My F550 6.7 gets 8-12 on the highway and like 1-3 in the city

There’s a decent amount of videos and blogs out there about guys who’ve compared and owned both and EVERY single one of them has regretted the purchase of the ZR2. And most of them aren’t talking about little personal gripes. I mean like serious issues that make it a bad purchase when comparing the two

Plus the fact that they jacked up the price of diesel. It doesn't make sense to buy a diesel right now.

Yeah having a diesel for anything other than hauling is pretty much pointless now. The engines cost twice as much and fail twice as often due to all this new aftertreatment EPA shit. If you don't need a diesel or if you have no preference, go with gas. Can't deny the coolness factor of having a diesel truck, but if you don't care about that just get a gas truck.

I’ve had my Taco for about 10 weeks...my neighbor has had his ZR2 for just about a year.

His ZR2 has been in his garage for about the same time as I have had the Taco....rest of the time, at the Chevy dealer. One thing after another. He’s pursuing the lemon law here in KA...he can’t even complete a sentence involving his ZR2 without using some choice words for his nearly $50K adventure.

And that’s the name of that tune.

I've experienced about 18-19 on average here in WI, on winter blended fuel and with quite a few hills. Perfectly acceptable for a mid-size pickup truck.

As others have stated, Tacomas are among the few vehicles today that should last you hundreds of thousands of miles without major repairs needed (assuming regular maintenance). Even with higher mpgs on average in many other vehicles, costly repairs on those vehicles will wipe away those aggregate savings quickly.

    My .02!

well what are they comparing it too? because all the midsize trucks are roughly the same, all the full size trucks are also roughly the same.

I just compared an f150 v8 to a tacoma and over 100k miles the f150 is gonna cost you 1000 dollars more in gas.

I guess I am not sure what people are expecting?

toyota camry gets 33mpg combined? and thats a car.

Suvs fall in the 20 - 30 range.

midsize/fullsize falls in the 12 - 20 range. So the tacoma is right there. The gas mileage complaint seems strange.

Add in the reliability here and yea its a no brainer for toyota. Even if the zr2 gets better mpg its gonna amount to a few hundred dollars plus or minus in either vehicles favor. Which really amounts to nothing...

    Did someone say ZR2 ;)

No difference. Zr2 owner here (V6)

My buddy has a brand new Taco 2019. We travel a lot together & tbh we both get around the same MPG.

We don't drive like Grandparents so our MPG is down to about 15.
