Wife drives a 2016 Trail Premium 4Runner and I have a Tacoma Off Road, so basically we have both vehicles you're describing. The 4Runner, for a daily driver is better IMO. Ride is better, it feels good, and is roomy. Lack of bed means creative solutions sometimes, but a MAJOR plus othertimes. About to go to Ozarks for a week, and roof top + hitch rack + cargo behind seats means I have most of my stuff secured and easily accessible.

Plus, back window rolls down for easy access without opening gate.

I drive Taco, she drives 4Runner, but we switch as needed. 4Runner is the trip car, and we've hit off road parks with hit and it does just as good as a Tacoma all day long.

This really isn't a helpful review, I'm just saying if you can't have both, it will come down to what you put in the back. If it's gonna get messy, maybe Tacoma. If not, 4Runner.

Yeah not popular in the south. Tremendously popular in the West/NW. Had the 22RE 4 cyl motor. We had to lift my mothers driver seat, to check oil. Essentially a RWD, mid engine, minivan. Burnouts were fun :D

Yeah I am in the market last two years. They fetch $8800-$12,000 for a clean one in this market. I want the tan one.

$2500 for 4wd, stick shift, diesel in Japanese auctions. They come here and price goes up.

Wow thank you all for all of the great input, very helpful. Both would be good, I guess it will come down to what they feel like on a test drive, and an in person feel. Obviously the bed on the Tacoma is great but the dry cargo space would be nice too.

Not to help confuse you but adding a camper shell to a Tacoma gives you both essentially :) Decisions! But seriously, go drive them both, at highway speeds, and take them over some bumps, the 4Runner simply feels more polished, but that's not a knock against my 3rd Gen, but you'll see what I mean if you drive them both.

I had four 4runners before I purchased a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 Double cab. Something that I don't think has been mentioned is the back seat. If you need a back seat for adults, that will be tough in the Tacoma. The 4Runner has more room in the back seats and adults can actually sit them them.

Also, there is a little more distance between the gas pedal and brake pedal. I had to move my foot at times when I moved it from the gas and brake pedals. It's hard to describe but it's something I've not experienced in previous vehicles.

The seats in the Tacoma are lower to the floor than the 4runner.

The current model 4runner has good power below 4,000 rpms. The 16 Tacoma power doesn't seem to get to it's power until 4,000 rpm.

The new NAV screen on the Tacoma rocks. It's is much better than what is in the 4Runner.

The Tacoma is great but it's just different the 4runner. To me the truck bed of the Tacoma would be the deciding factor along with the coolness of the Tacoma :)

I agree the 4runner does feel more polished.
