I'm very glad they were found and got out safe, but... that scout camp is only 2 miles off the highway on a road with no offshoots? How did she get so lost? I'm guessing that she must have taken the wrong exit off the highway and she was relying on Google Maps to reroute her, which it was unable to do without cell service.

Great example of why you should have your digital maps downloaded to your device and a communications device that isn't reliant on a cell network, like a Garmin InReach. (And a paper map and compass.)

Super easy to miss the turn or turn too early. Roughly 40 miles outside of Angels Camp.

We used to go up through Ripon, CA, the "City of Action" always made me crack up. HWY 49, then HWY 4. Even telling friends to "go past CABBAGE PATCH MAINTENCE STATION" they still took the wrong turn.

    If stranded:

    1. Stay with the vehicle!

    2. Minimum three gallons of water per person. (that will last three days).

    3. How long can you survive without Oxygen, 3 minutes; without water, 3 days; without food, 3 weeks. Cars make great shelters, so stay with the vehicle.

1970s, outside of Bastow, CA. Assisted BLM ranger in recovering a stuck vehicle. The tourist got stuck and decided to walk for help. Both perished. Keys were left in the car, we aired down the tires, and backed out of the sand. The longest drive back (20 miles), but it sticks with me 50 years later.

I carry 14 gallons of water (two containers) when off roading. Seven is plenty for me, the other seven are to help out other campers/motorists.
