The 3rd gen Tacoma came to us in 2016 and since then it has had some competition come back into the market. What are thoughts on a mid-cycle refresh or update? With the soon to be released Ranger and Bronco in 2019 and 2020, it seems to me that 2020 will be a great time for Toyota to do it. I'd love to see the Entune 3.0 with Android Auto and Apple Car play come to the Tacoma. What do you all think? I would really love to see Toyota bring the ZF 8 speed from the Landcruiser into the Tacoma. I think its proven itself as bullet proof at this point. Thoughts? Comments?

No major changes, maybe a couple different colors.

    Welcome to TW!
It's not going to happen, Toyota will stick with their regularly scheduled refresh every 10 years.

Probably be in for some mid-cycle refresh stuff soon in 2020 or 2021. Doubtful you'll see any major changes in the guts of the truck until mid 2020s, but perhaps new grills, lighting, fender design, minor interior updates... nothing earth shattering is likely to happen for a few years though.

What changed in the mid-cycle refresh for the 2nd gen? Anything significant?

It's a good thing that they keep the refresh set 10yrs apart. It can have a negative effect on the resale values when the vehicle looks differently every few yrs. Yeah maybe it wouldn't effect the Tacoma as much as other small trucks, but it would drop the resale none the less

Honestly Green Pro is very likely, they are currently recycling all of the FJ Loser colors, and an Overlanding Package could be just the gimmick Toyota is looking for. You can go pound sand with your other suggestions.

If anything I see voodoo blue coming to the TRD models and the pro will get a cherry red.

Edit: except they'll call it viper red to be cooler

With all the weak motor complaints from those whose feet don't reach the firewall that eight speed tranny would Spice up the drive. Instead of 4 with 2 overdrive it could be 6 with 2 overdrive making it easier for the short legged and light footed to get the truck up to speed.

As far as refreshments are concerned, I can only wish for useful things such as a driver’s side grab handle, locking gas fill door, and maybe a V8 option for the pro. But, not happening!

We might get lucky and get a hood or fender refresh, and they’ll call it a day. Not gonna make me trade mine in, just say'n.

Asking for Apple or Android play is a big ask.

Moreover, it’s really unnecessary as I simply hang hang my IPhone SX on the dash and there I go. By asking automakers for Apple or Android play, you’re denying them your marketing profile access. In other words, they now have to go ask someone else (who is tracking you) for your marketing profile so they can tailor products to a given customer use/habits.

Also asking for an eight speed transmission is asking for trouble. Just do research on those vehicles and then ask yourself if you really want to roll the dice and deal with all those issues and expense owners of those vehicles are having.
Yes, those eight speed transmissions are likely to get better MPG, but just remember, there is no free lunch…

    Hope that helps!
    Cheers!

I doubt diesel. US is already moving to cleaner emissions and even BMW is dropping their highly popular X5 diesel (same as I got). They've stated this as well as most car manufacturers are joining the electrical/hybrid race.

Ford already has the diesel Ranger in Asian/pacific market for years but they used the 4 cycl turbo for the US market instead. Same reasoning.

I personally think in years to come, we'll see more of mpg focused turbo/electric engines that give V6 performance with better mileage and super low emission. Yep...those days of hearing a truck sound like a truck would be long gone by then !!

I think we will see a new 4Runner before the refresh of the Taco. I’m hoping 2020 for new 4Runner, we are in the market, but want to wait until the new generation is at least unveiled. I think the Taco will refresh may be a year or so after the next all new 4Runner is released.
