Tacoma vibration 55-60 mph ( I have tried everything )

    Hello TW,

    Before I start, id like to say that I have been researching this issue for a month now and have read a majority of the threads related to this. But I have a few questions I have yet to find the answers to and was hoping the community could chime in and help out. I made a checklist to keep track of what I have and have not fixed or checked yet. If there is something I am neglecting please give me a heads up.

    I am going to drop my truck off Friday morning to have the driveshaft balanced, a brand new carrier bearing installed and all 3 U-joints replaced. I installed the CB spacer kit and it helped a little but not enough. As I installed that spacer, I grabbed the driveshaft and could move it around fairly easy and the rubber in the bearing seem to be pretty weathered. Maybe this is causing most of the vibrations? Here is what I have checked so far hunting this down.

    Other questions:

    * I was considering the polyurethane bushings for the steering rack when I replace the whole thing. However my transmission shop advised me against it and said they tend to cause squeaks. Can anyone verify if this is true? I like polyurethane but I HATE squeaks lol

    * The drive-line shop advised me against a 1-piece driveshaft because my truck is lifted and apparently having a little flex/play with the 2 piece keeps the wear and tear off the transmission and rear end gears. They said those are better for stock trucks without lift. Is this true?

    * Besides the vibration, I can hear a humming noise in a pulsing rhythm at lower speeds or when coasting to a stop from highway speed. Has anyone else heard this noise? I already had my transmission and rear end checked and everything is OK.

    * Does anyone have any pictures of how to remove the drive shaft from a 2nd gen? I found an awesome thread on this but was for a 1st gen and after looking under my truck i realized they are much different in the way they bolt up. I have found instruction but no pictures of a 2nd gen yet.

    * After installing my Deaver mini pack I was very happy with the outcome. However, I now have a squeak that makes my truck sound like a old boat trailer or worse. The squeak is insanely loud and I can hear it up to 30mph when the wind drowns it out. I have tried Grease, Dry Lube, WD40, OIL , soapy water, pressure washer and graphite powder. Most of these will help for a day if I am lucky, then back to normal. HAS ANYONE FOUND A LEGITIMATE FIX FOR THIS?? its driving me crazy and hate the looks I get when driving through parking lots.


    Here is my front end set up as of today. The ToyTec coil-overs are now 5 yrs+ old and I can see the rubber bushing at the bottom knuckle is deformed and bulging out to the point that its causing minor squeak noises. I am still trying to decide between Fox and King for the front CO's.

    Got the truck back this morning. The shop says my driveshaft is balanced perfect and the angle is also on point and doesn't need to be adjusted. However, no luck with fixing the vibration. I guess my next plan of action is to replace the coilovers...

    any input?

    Mark a spot on the drive shaft and pinion flange like so using a paint marker:

    Remove 14mm bolts holding carrier bearing

    Slide entire shaft out of transmission output shaft housing.

    Tom Woods 1 piece. Have them in all 5 of my current lifted vehicles and many from the past. Here is a highly lifted Jeep with one, solved all of my problems for $350 bucks. Good luck.

    Im not sure what that adapter is? I had Americas Tire Co do the balancing. I had to bring it back to have them do it again because I was convinced it was the wheels out of balance. I have heard some talk on this forum about Tacoma wheels being very hard to balance. I have aftermarket wheels ( M/T sidebitter ) does this change anything?

    It's typically highly recommended that any tires/wheels you put on a Toyota (like our Tacomas) be Road Force Balanced (not just balanced).



    Road Force Balancing basically makes sure the tire and wheel are balanced properly with weight or force on them. Typical balancing only makes sure they are "balanced" as they spin freely in the air with no load on them.

    It can make a big difference on Tacomas apparently.
