    Hey Everyone,

Just curious as to everyone's thoughts regarding my thinking here. I've been considering selling my Taco for a 6.0 powerstroke. First let me say, I love my taco and know the problems with the 6.0. However, I've always wanted a F250. Now I can afford one. I also want something bigger with more room. Thoughts on if I should go for it or not?

If I did, I'd take the F250 to a good diesel mechanic before purchasing and upgrade/replace whatever was sketchy on it (oil cooler, EGR delete, etc). I'm just trying to weigh the pros and cons here. Obviously, my low mileage 2010 is going to be more reliable than the F250. I don't drive every day anyway though (have a work truck).

    Thoughts?

Get what your really want. Don't settle. If getting a f250 is what you've always wanted then do it, gotta do what ever makes you happy.

I traded my old 1998 F150 for my new Tacoma.
That ford was a great truck, over 200,000 miles, very few problems with it.
I guess if you need the F250 for towing then go for it, or more room as you say.

There would be no way at this time I would even consider trading my Tacoma for another F150 or a 250.
Best of luck if this is what you decide to do.

I drove my 02 7.3 f250 for 3 or 4 years before I finally upgraded to my current Tacoma. A couple of things to note:
You will spend more on fuel. Diesel is more expensive.

Oil changes more expensive, suspension and steering components are more expensive.

The Tacoma rides much more like a passenger vehicle than the super duty. It's more comfortable imo.

You will be able to haul almost anything.

The 6.0 may give you serious problems, I'd either find a low mileage 7.3 (rare) or go with a 6.4.

If that's what you want then go for it! Not best suited for my daily driving but to each his own.

    6.NO...

Look im all about a guy getting what he wants, and im not this giant Toyota fan boy that thinks nothing else exists. I think Ford trucks are great, I have owned 3 and the company i work for currently has about 60. I am shop manager and head of maintenance for this company. I have worked for this company for over 10 years and its all we have ever owned. We have gone through the 7.3 generation, the 6.0 generation, 6.4 trucks and we now have the 6.7 trucks. We ran 7.3's in the ground with a couple over 300k and 1 over 400k, with nothing more than regular maintenance. Great engines. Now when it comes to the 6.NO... well im not even going to go in to all of the issues. (EGR, Turbo, Head Gaskets, Total Engine Failure, all on trucks under 100k) Trust me, its a bad idea. We had multiple issues with 6.4 trucks as well. The 6.7 trucks have been great so far... time will tell. As far as performance, well if you can keep a 6.0 together a few mods here and there you can embarrass most people with any other truck or factory American made sports car for that matter. But when that boost gets way up there...LOOK OUT! Lol, just my 2cents. Hope it helps.

Not saying there arent a few around with high mileage but if you find one that hasnt had many issues, well i promise you Papaw kept it in the garage most of its life.

If you want it, go for it. I've been looking at 6.0's as well. I almost traded my 1964 Ford galaxie for a "built" 6.0. Why? Because i need a tow rig and I'd like another daily driver to keep miles off of the tacoma.

When looking for one of these trucks, the infinity DP tuner is the best thing you can have.http://www.dp-tuner.com/featured-products-1/infinity-dx-touchscreen-6-0l.html

My buddy who is a diesel mechanic has one for his 6.0. Im glad he came with me to look at the truck. The owner said it was completely bullet proofed and it ran perfect. After looking at the truck, with only 150k miles, we saw that it did NOT have the head studs like the owner said but it did have an EGR delete. With the DP tuner, we scanned the truck for any codes. It showed that injector #5 was failing as well as the coolant temp was dropping faster than the oil temp. They should be within about 10* of each other and just starting the truck up, there was 15* difference. This showed us that it either had a blown head gasket or cracked heads.

After these trucks have been bullet proofed by a reputable diesel performance trucks, they are great. If they havent been, it's a time bomb waiting to go off. The 6.4's have some of the same, but different problems added on top. But when the 6.4's are completely bullet proofed, you cant beat the power they put out.

i bought an 06 6.0 and put 70k miles on it. great truck! no engine issues. that being said:

maintenance costs: truck holds 15 quarts of oil. fuel filters every 15k miles, diesel at 4 bucks a gallon.

Lots of shit that can go boom- egr's, egr coolers, turbos, injectors, head gaskets, blah blah blah. all of it is very expensive.

hard to work on- peek under the hood, looks like a giant bird nest. if you want to fix above issues, you often need to take the cab off. not good.

Mods- I ran an innovative tune, and it made my truck into a very fast rig. I was drag racing Evo's through town, and keeping up. hit the fuel peddle, let the turbo spool, and you will light up both rear tires. Oh, and you will blot out the sun with black smoke.

Conclusion- I loved the space, size, and capability of the super duty. That said, I didn't need the towing capabilities, costs, and potential for the engine to turn into an 18k paperweight. My taco is capable, and drama free.

Don't get me wrong, super duties are great trucks. I just found myself spending way more than I needed to simply because I "loved my diesel". And now that I've switched, my life is simpler and cheaper. I wouldn't go back just for the love of diesels or Ford's. Not unless I needed to haul stuff REGULARLY that my Tacoma couldn't touch.

Have you considered just putting some more money into your Tacoma?

If you can afford it, you could easily put some more money into armor/lift/wheels and tires/creature comforts depending on what you're looking for and how you use it. You'd still end up spending less money and probably keeping some simplicity and reliability one of the newer superduties might not give you.

It's your money... spend it the way you want too. Asking on a Tacoma forum will not yield you unbiased answers. You have already pointed out that you know there are issues with the 250. There are issues with the Tacoma as well. Only you can decide what is best for you. If I had the money for a King Ranch 250 I'd buy a M3 but that's just me.

6.0 actually isnt even a bad engine. If you take away everybody that had problems AFTER tuning and adding bolt on parts then it had the same amount of problems as any other truck.. Thats why when the 6.4 came out they made sure less people would mod it by saying anything you did would void your warranty

    Listen to these guys.

I went through the same situation (looking at a ford diesel) before getting the taco. The 7.3's I found with low mileage cost an arm and a leg. The 6.0's are cheap with low miles for a reason. Yes, you can make them bullet proof but plan on spending 4-5k to get it done right. 6.4 still has issues. Brand new was too expensive for me but I have a buddy that has the 6.7 and he loves it (and no problems).

I dont know where you get that the 6.0 is a good engine. Because of a lawsuit against Ford, this is the engine that single handedly destroyed the long running relationship between Ford/Navistar aka (International). Read, its right here...

    http://www.autonews.com/article/20131024/OEM10/131029950/ford-settles-class-action-over-navistar-diesels#

Again i have nothing against Ford, but the 6.0 was a FAILURE. Modified or not.

Personal experience. I worked with a diesel mechanic for 6 months and the only 6.0s we worked on had all been modified

The mechanic also said almost 99% of the ones he worked on were modified. So I just took it from personal experience

Yeah, I have thought about putting more money into the Taco. I love the truck and the ability to mod it, for sure. I just really want a huge truck and a diesel. Need the diesel...absolutely not. Need the space...kinda (I'm 6'4 and my wife's 6'0....imagine when we have kids!). Maybe a diesel conversion to solve one of the problems?? Hahaha

Your conclusion is helping a lot. I'd probably be right with you if I bought one, but at the same time, I think I'll always want one if I don't do it. Maybe I'll get a 6.7 instead, though I've heard rumors the turbos may be problematic (they just developed a new one for the 2015) and I miss the loud, limited emission diesels.

Thanks for all the input, everyone!!!! Everyone has been a great help, as always.
