What does that prove though? Even cars with questionable reliability can make it to 200k. Just cost a lot of $$$$ in repairs to get there.

it gives some insight on how a vehicle ages. You’re not going to see a high volume of questionable cars at that mileage for sale because they never made it. Do you really think the average person will spend $ and time to get keep an unreliable truck going for 300k miles? No, and if they do, they are outliers. People trade in their vehicles these days because the TPMS light comes on.

there are dozens and dozens of 2nd gen tacomas with over 400,000 miles for sale. Will you see that same trend/volume in a model that had a lot of issues? No because they’re in junk yards and are extinct.

does it prove anything? No, just like any other post here.
The OP asked about reliability, nothing anyone posts here will prove anything.

Looking at high mileage sample sizes that are for sale gives more insight than one persons anecdotal experience.

You said 200k. 200k vs 400k is a big jump. I see plenty of 200k vehicles for sale online. Even ones that are known to have poor reliability. I'm sure many of them have had some sort of high dollar repair in its lifetime but we won't know the answer to that.

Same with a 200k tacoma. It could have been perfect for 200k or needed major repairs.

Can you show us these dozens of 2nd gens with 400k for sale? I think the 2nd gen is one of the best trucks ever made but have never seen one with over 400k for sale.

I chose 200K for the 3rd gen because they really haven’t been out that long.

There are numerous examples of ~300k 2nd gens, one of them is 4xx,xxx, I stand corrected on that, I thought I saw more a few weeks ago.

Given cars are treated as consumables these days, paired with high labor costs i think the majority of the cars with technical issues don’t make it.

    Another example.
I still see 3rd gen 4Runners driving around town. For sale with crazy high miles. There other SUVs/cars/vans made in the same time frame that were volume sellers that are basically extinct.

Either way. As far reliability goes, we have nothing directly quantitive to show.

Not sure what vehicle you are asking about? Not that it really matters because the answer to any if the three mentioned would be no.

I own both. There’s nothing magical about the 4.0. The 3.5 and 4.0 are both fine engines and will more than likely outlast most of the rest of the truck. The 4Runner has more interior room in the front seat and back. The back seat is actually something an adult can sit in. A little more headroom. The Tacoma feels sportier, even lifted. Build quality seems better on my 4Runner. Feels more solid. The interior also seems extremely dated. You could easily mistake it for a vehicle made 20 years ago.

I own both. If I had to choose one, it would come down to a decision between needing more interior space for passengers, luggage, groceries or a truck bed for truck stuff. If you rarely need the truck bed, you could get a small utility trailer with a 4Runner and have the best of both.

I replaced my Tacoma with a GX470 and then a GX460. No regrets leaving the Tacoma behind. No reliability issues with my 460. The GX is the perfect balance of power and size in my opinion.

    Yes,
But, go ahead and trade it in, I doubt this will be your last vehicle,,, with this logic (more like newness desires), you will overthink the next one and find a reason to get rid of it.

BTW: try a search, this topic has been beaten in to the dirt.

Yesterday I saw a truck load of Toyotas two of those vehicles were 3rd gen Tacos, everything else looked to be CUV. 4th gens might be a while.

    If you don't need a bed get a 4runner it's a much better vehicle. I've owned both.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
    I've had a 5th gen 4Runner SR5 as a rental for a few days. Maybe I can provide a bit of insight.

Tacoma if you need/want a bed, 4Runner if you don't.

I also have a ‘21 Taco and an ‘06 GX.
The GX has been an amazing vehicle for coming up ten years of ownership now.
The Taco has its use when a bed is required, otherwise I’ll take the GX 10 times out of 10.

I had both, 4runner had 324K+ miles on it when I sold it. Tacoma works great for my needs. Good luck with your search.

The 4Runner will just simply feel better overall. I've had both and that was my experience. If you don't need the bed space of the Tacoma why not get the last year of the classic 4Runner!?!?!?!!!

I had a 2004 limited 4r for about 13 years & 278000 miles. I bought my 23 Tacoma from a individual & when I test drove it I knew before I got out of his driveway the runner was a much better ride! That being said I love the taco & have no regrets although I was open to buying either vehicle. I don’t know much about the taco engine but I do plan to drive it for hopefully 400,000 miles

Having owned a 2017 sr5 4x4 4runner and a 2020 trd off road 4runner I can say the 4runner rides much nicer, has nicer seats, sits up higher, shifts better, power as soon as you punch the throttle and offers a lot more interior storage room.

Downsides they use more gas than the tacoma and drive like a brick in the wind on the freeway.

edit: the front bumper clips near the top by the headlights are notorious for popping off on the 4runner.

If you don’t need the truck bed, I’d consider a 4Runner, GX or even a used, well taken care of 200 series Land Cruiser.

    Well Said.

I will add that in my opinion the Tacoma, the 4Runner, and (and I will throw in) the FJ are three related vehicles, but each fulfills a different want and need. I find all three of my vehicles just as reliable as the other and find that not one of them is "worse" maintenance wise than the others. As BillyE said choose what fits your needs best.
