Not true. Suspension, driveline and brakes of the Hilux and Taco are basically the same except for stiffer leaf springs on the Hilux.

If the Hilux were sold in the US, it likely won't be able to maintain its 1-ton payload rating when subjected to US test standards.

I've been wondering this for a while BUT....is that Hilux rocking an Avid Off Road light bar? I love the look of that light bar

From what I remember about the truck was that it was customized in Canada. An Avid would be totally available up there. It was the tires and fenders that got me.

I believe those are Iceland Arctic trucks. The huge tires are so they float on the packed snow.

Hilux Access Cab 4x4's payload is 2,500lb. Tacoma AC is 1,600lbs.

But what makes the Tacoma better in your opinion? Are you driving a current model Hilux, or an older generation?

isnt the tacoma rated to tow more and has a higher payload? i dont really understand that since it has about the same torque at a lower rpm show it should have no problem pulling and if all things else are pretty similar i would think so would weight ratings, unless the hilux just weights that much more.

My understanding is that the Tacoma is cheaper to manufacture and has a wider profit margin. The Hilux is has to deal with more fierce competition globally from the Ranger.

Tow ratings have more to do with transmission cooling, hitch rating and braking ability.

Hilux is rated to tow 5,500lb compared to the Tacoma's 6,500lbs.

As I stated in a previous post, the Hilux has a higher payload capacity.

i see now on the payload i look it up. so the tacoma has a better hitch rating? that seem illogical. and the hilux doesnt come with a tranny cooler. just doesnt seem like its really set up to be the "work horse" that they advertise it to be. so as everyone would agree the best thing would be a tacoma with the 3.0 D4D in it and a tundra 10.5 rearend?

I don't know if they "ride" more like a car. A Tacoma is certainly car feeling when compared to my 3rd Gen 4runner.

The reason for the exterior being more rounded and modern is the safety standards of the world. Europe adopted the "French Pedestrian Law" which is basically any car sold in Europe has to be tested with pedestrian impacts. So I doubt a Tacoma would pass the test with the flat broad front. You can see the trend for "rounded" fronts from all the European and global makes these days. Look how VWs went from a flat front to a round nose, ect.

The interior being more refined and car like... well when you are dropping $40k on a truck you don't want a tractor with a sheet metal dash. The Hilux has received 2-3 face lifts in the last few years. Toyota has certainly put more effort in to it.

Meh. You have to remember the Hilux is sold in a 100+ markets with a dozen power-train configurations and trim levels. I'm sure most "work-horse" trucks are stripper diesel single cabs with a manual.

I'd rather have a Tacoma Body, Hilux chassis, Ranger Interior and Ford 9" rear. :p

i have driven both, but only the 2wd gas version of the Hilux in Mexico. The Hilux is tougher and rides more like an old school truck, less refined ride and steering. IMO my Taco looks better stock, but modified they both look good. For me the Taco with the D4D would be perfect, 32mpg+ hw and low range torque, one can dream.

I'd take that V-dub over the ranger any day.

I drove the VW AMAROK the other day. Turbo diesel. Had about 1600lbs in the bed -- was doing fine. Drives very nice and it seems a bit bigger than the Tacoma. The seats were way better than the Tacomas. Fully adjustable
