The Global Colorado is due for a return in 2014. I wonder if they will keep the diesel engine option (doubt it).

Notice how it too has a round front and modern interior.

When comparably equipped (DCSB 4x4 1GR-FE with 5-speed auto), the Hilux is about as expensive to manufacture as the Taco. Probably a greater proportion of Hiluxes sold are workhorse stripper models, which means an average Taco is in fact more expensive to make than an average Hilux.

The real reason for the Toyota pickup line to diverge between the Hilux and Tacoma in 1995 was to produce a wider truck for the North American market. Toyota does this for other models as well. For example, the North American Camry is wider than the JDM Camry.

That's because the Amarok (77") is in fact wider than the Tacoma (75"), which itself is wider than the Hilux (72").

Not sure how you figure this considering the Hilux has a higher quality interior (more $) and boxed frame ( more $). It's also received more updates.

Hilux is 69" (single) and 72" wide (AC, DC). Tacoma is 72" (single) and 74" (AC, DC).

Its amazing what 2" will do. The rear cab area has more leg room. Its a very good looking truck. The interior could have seen a better design but the seats are fantastic compared to the Tacoma's. With the turbo it pulls pretty nice for a 4 cylinder. According to the owner it get very good mileage.

How do you figure the Hilux has a higher quality interior?

In the context of a whole truck, the influence of a "fully" boxed frame in the Hilux versus a 1/3-boxed, double-wall riveted frame in the Taco on the overall cost of the truck, is minimal.

The Hilux got a facelift recently, as did the Taco. Powertrain is the same. Electronic gadgets (VSC, ATRAC...) are the same.

I drove a Hilux in the Dominican Republic. We drove from the city to where my girlfriend's parents live in the country. Took about 40 mins. It rode ok and seemed to have decent throttle response. But after 15 mins the road I was on was unpaved and it had rain quite a bit. We took a shortcut to the house and we encountered a huge puddle, it took all I had not to go threw the puddle, but my girlfriend begged me to drive around the side. The suspension drove fairly smooth off-road as well. The suspension was a little stiff but that's how I like it and driving position was good for me. I only drove it a few times and not the way I wanted. So I can't really tell how it is. Diesel engine did sound nice.

The Hilux looks like a cross between a Tacoma and a Frontier or Titan

Part of the Arctic Trucks conversion is a linked rear axle with coil springs:

Much stricter laws on trailers over there too. Many trailers that you can hitch to and go with over here actually require certifications over there.

Interesting that they have grab handles overhead on the hilux instead of the curtain airbags. Im also guessing the A/C controls are digital through the touchscreen? Also what about the overhead console? Looks bare.. And rearview mirror doesn't have the digital screen (or so it looks..)

Too much government here, so we get the bags and massive pillars which end up blocking more view and probably led to more collisions . I know they almost do for me. The AC controls are buttons around the smaller lower LCD screen.

The truck is smaller with less blind spots so the rear-view camera isn't bothered with for that reason and cost. It's also a luxury American thing like parking self assist to them. The stick 4x4 is gone to fit a few more cup holders for our big gulps.....I would rather have the option to buy these here instead of the boring crossovers where people need the storage/cargo, but not a massive SUV.

good link here as there's a lot of misconceptions posted in this thread...

    http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/81820-2014-Tacoma-to-share-design-with-HiLux

    good comment in this link...

"There are big differences between the two trucks, and most Americans would not put up with the ride/handling tradeoff the Hilux has made to pull off its extra GVWR. In addition, the Hilux is built somewhat differently, with many more things welded that are clipped/bolted in the Tacoma. I suspect this is because the Tacoma is meant to be repaired when it is damaged (Tacomas live in worlds of garages and body shops), whereas it's expected the Hilux will always just be hammered back into shape until it finally dies. The service intervals that Hiluxes endure (50,000 miles without oil changes?) given their environments (often 95% off-road in a place like northern Uganda or western Kenya or South Sudan) are radically different from the Tacoma's expected life."
