Tacoma's are dumbed down versions of a real truck for Americans that want a "car" driving experience. Very evident in the fact Americans get the soft leaf pack and Canadians get the stronger leaf pack... and neither get the Hilux.

What I have heard is they are identical except that the hilux as a steel (I think) bed instead of plastic like the tacoma, and something with a transmission gear thing is different. And of course bodies but other than that they are the same. I just wish we could get that diesel engine

TRD Exhaust, Mobtown bolt on sliders and aluminum tailgate reinforcement, Reverse lights changed to yellow turn signals, LED pods added for reverse, ADD W1 oil catch can, Total Chaos bed reinforcement, rear diff breather to taillight mod, 12" combo led bars behind lower grill wired to high beams, Toyota led bed light kit, 400 watt anytime mod, SSO slimeline front bumper.
The Hiluxs I looked at on dealer lots in Australia didn't have a beds installed. You let them know if you want a flat bed or a bed like we have on trucks over here.

The company i used to work for imported the 4cylinder diesel hilux and i drove them and worked on them for years. The body metal is thinner than tacomas and the interiors arent as roomy. They're slow but have crazy torque, leaf packs are stiff, frame is boxed and much stronger than tacoma, rear axle is identical non-electric lsd. Overall i would pick the tacoma but the hilux can take a beating.

Let's face it. Toyota has market share here in the US. They won't put all of the extras into our trucks until Chevy and ford are able to give them a run for the money.

Never understood the facscination with a small diesel. I drove a Prado in Costa Rica for a week. The 3.0L 1KD-FTV turbodiesel makes just 161 hp, so midrange acceleration is like a pig. And there's no engine braking going downhill, so I'm on the brakes more often. Perhaps this is why they offer the 1GR-FE V6 as the upgrade engine in Australia...

In reading this article, and comparing it to the Wikipedia article:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Hilux

It sounds like the exploringoverland author is referring to Hilux body styles that are no longer made. The Wikipedia 7th generation lists only the body styles also available for the Tacoma. No mention of 1 ton models, or 7.5 foot beds.

I remember when they made the Isuzu 1 ton long bed 2wd. I also remember when you could get a compact 4wd pickup with a long bed, and even with a snow plow package. However, these options died out over a decade ago.

As far as the diesel engine in the Hilux; at 6000 miles a year, I would never recover the upfront cost.

^It may not be available in all markets, but the Wikipedia article you linked has a photo of a regular cab with a 7' bed and external cleats:

This model has a payload rating of over 2000 lb, though not by US standards (i.e. not accounting for braking ability, rollover risk, etc.)

That Hilux is a helluva lot better looking than a Gen2 Tacoma. Nice sloping hood, round fender wells instead of those goofy squared-off Tacoma wheelwells. Functional skewp.

That Ford Ranger looks goofy. Look at those tiny driver and passenger windows. I like a lot of visibility, those windows look like they're about 14 inches tall.
