Tacoma vs the new Santa Cruz

Oh, I stand corrected. I was thinking 1,500 pounds looked about all I would tow with the Santa Cruz. Wow! 5,000 pounds, that is not bad at all.

 

Quick google search shows the higher-trimmed ones come with a turbo 2.5L 4 cylinder that makes a few more horses and quite a bit more torque. Better mileage too but it's quite a bit lighter. Pretty neat little thing.

Why in the world is that thing a four door?

 

I bought a Santa Cruz Limited last year thinking I could live with that truck and be happy.
I paid MSRP at $42k, it was definitely fast with 300 plus lb ft of torque and fast shifting DCT.

However, I don't know why 4 months of owning it, I really missed Tacoma, the rough riding, slow ass Tacoma I don't know why I crave that.

I took great care for it, changed oil, DCT fluid, rear diff, upgraded the ugly halogen bulbs all to LED, put the lightest 18 inch wheels on it and some performance tires on it, and yet every time I saw a Tacoma I wanted to go back.

So I got out of it when the market was great and sold it to carmax for $42k after putting 11k miles, you can still find it on there https://www.carmax.com/car/22037412.

Now I'm driving a slow, rough, manual AC, plain jane 4 banger naturally aspirated, no BSM, no fancy tech Taco and I love every second of it.

update: with the Santa Cruz, I really didn't feel my Hobie board was secure with just 700mm of roof rack spreads. Sherpa rack on the Tacoma I use 5 straps and I'm sure it'll be secure even at 120mph (I doubt that the 2.7 can get that fast anyway)

 

The Subaru Baja has a 3'6" bed.
Hyundai Santa Cruz has a 4'3" bed. It's 9 inches longer than the Subaru Baja bed.

Most people would say 9 inches is pretty good.

Short bed Tacoma is 9 inches longer than Santa Cruz bed.

 

Are dual clutches even desirable anymore? Seems like most automakers are moving away from it, even in sports cars like Bmw M and Mercedes AMG, they all moved to traditional automatics. I especially don't think it fits a pickup.

What's even more weird is how they gave the fwd a normal automatic, and the awd version the dct. Should be vice versa imo since they advertise the awd ones off road.

Where does it outperform real trucks? Just wondering because I just quickly looked it up and it appears that the only spec they show is towing.. And there it is not bad but not as much as any of the known mid size trucks. Payload may be high, though not listed on their website yet, but with a 4ft bed, does it matter. Not likely to be able to load that bed with much anyway. You can have all the payload you want, but if you can't really use it, it's irrelevant and that bed is short.

It certainly has plenty of power and I am sure it is lighter than any mid size truck. So performance wise, it should be better. I like the looks. reminds me of the old Subaru Brat.

Has nothing to due with a tow package, I have the 4 cylinder.

I mentioned it having a short bed, just saying it has some competitive numbers.

Guessing he has the 4 banger, they are only rated at 3500.

Which one??? Where we live Tacomas aren’t considered real trucks either…if it ain’t a 1 Tonner diesel or larger it is shite…my buddies refer to my 3rd Gen as a “chick truck”. Love the thing, but I don’t consider it a real truck either.

 

I had an '83 Brat (my son loved the rear facing seats in the bed) and a 2003 Baja. Fun vehicles but not much use as a truck. Suited my needs at the time, though.

 

Downsized Chevy Avalanche ?

 

I had one of those, too - a 1980 Saab 900Turbo. Loved it. Great car - used to cruise the German Autobahns at 120mph in '80/'81. But the oil cooled turbos were notorious for blowing seals around 80k miles. You knew when it went since it pumped oil into your exhaust manifold and the car would be engulfed in a blue cloud.
