I owned a diesel f250 and f350. My 4runner and tundra are better in every way. My tundra with 400hp pulls up hills unlike my diesel Ford. The 5.7 tundra is a freaking beast and believe it or not it will probably Outlast the diesel. 2 tundras have already gone 1 million miles...

I have a 2019 taco but after owning a couple of v8's i would say go for the tundra the mpg difference is so close and the power is worth the trade off i wish i would of gone for the tundra or another mid size truck tbh and am just 9k miles in

    Stereotypical banter, hilarious!
Sure they get a bad rep from all the dummies that lift their trucks and do crazy exhaust mods but they are made for working and towing

Was speaking in terms of 1) price 2) mpg 3) functionality

The Trd Pro is as expensive (similar dimensions too probably), worse mpg, and not nearly as capable as a 3/4 ton

I guess I’m just biased toward the tacoma..
Doesn’t make sense to me to get rid of a paid for 1st gen and trade it in for a brand new Trd Pro tundra - it goes against both extremes of having a badass, capable, economical compact tacoma vs having a heavy duty work horse. Its like settling for neither, and getting the cons of both extremes with a high price tag Lol

But hey i don’t have to get it! if it’ll make you happy go for it the tundras I’m sure are reliable too

4x4 Tundra TRD Pro, GVWR 7200, curb 5640, payload 1560 (only available with a short bed, that's a downer along with addons)

4x4 T4Runner Pro GVWR 6300, curb 4750, payload 1550 (again, addons. MUST to compare apples to apples with Pros)

2004 Tacoma Xtra Cab 4x4, GVWR 5100, curb 3470, payload 1630  but your ass is gonna know it's there :(

haha wow I didn't realize the 04 1st gens had a higher payload than the Tundra, damn.

Yeah you'll be compressing your bump stops with that much weight back there lol. Need heavy duty leafs and/or air bags for it. Even with AP Expos my rear starts to noticeably sag around 500lbs.

Again, you're trying to compare a 3/4 ton domestic truck to a top of the line mid-sized 1/2 ton Toyota. Of course it's not going to be as "capable".

If you don't own a 15,000 pound boat or RV, there's really no reason to get a 2500 unless you collect trucknutz and need a big truck to hang them from.

If you want to try and compare similar option packages, you're going to have to go with the Big Horn or the Laramie which start >$55k, or the Limited which is over $60k, $70k if you want the 6.7 diesel.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to justify the price of the Pro, I think they are redonk expensive for what you get, and you'd get far more bang for your buck with an SR5, and an aftermarket locker + suspension.

Get good cash on the 1st gen and get a 4Runner PRO edition...that blue Tundra doesn't convince me much... to me looks likea a big blue whale monster .... in the other hand a 4Runner pro looks really badass, better MPG !..... carry on cargo ( few ocasions ) then just rent a trailer, :D

I had 300 lbs of bricks in the bed driving to FL and I could feel them... my trailer and bike weight around 1k and I try not to do that too often, I may need a S/C tho ;p

yeah these little 1st gens might be able to hold a lot but they aren't going to go anywhere fast with it, even with the supercharger my truck doesn't feel quick at all. I guess it helps though lol. I don't even remember what an N/A 3.4l feels like.

I'm not sure why you need to compare a Pro to a Pro. They don't necessarily have any more capacity than an non-Pro does. If anything, it's less because of all the added weight from the TRD Pro badging and floor mats, lol.

The Pros are also 4 doors, which significantly reduce the capacity since the GVWR is the same but they weight several hundred pounds more than an extracab or regular cab... The payload on the double cabs is more like 1400 or less depending on options:

I owned an 18 trd pro tundra, and a 17 trd pro Tacoma. Simply put, I miss the room the tundra had and the lower end torque. The 3.5 Lexus motor in the newer Tacoma sucks ass, and we all know if it says Toyota and it's a truck were not buying it for the fuel economy. Honestly, it's just eye candy. There TRD off-road limited tundra is an exceptional truck and you'll save almost ten grand.

I wouldn't get the tacoma. Im not very happy with mine at all. I'm a big fan of the tacoma and bought a 2008 new and a 2013 new. I made a mistake and bought the 2019 trd pro back in October and sure wish I had my '13 back. The 3.5 liter engine gets a lot worse gas mileage than the old 4.0L in the exact same use cases. I get 17 or 18 mpg compared to a constant uniform 20mpg in the old one. Have you heard how shifty the 2019 transmission is? It's very! Mine downshifts constantly and goes nowhere fast with high RPM's. It's embarassing to be in sometimes! Ive had it looked at by the dealership and they say that's the new normal. I'd advise anyone not to get a tacoma with the 3.5L. You will miss your old Tacoma if you trade it.

Another vote for the Tundra. I dislike my third gen Tacoma for a lot of the reasons you hear on here all day

I mean no offense, but I'd think that with the asking price of the TRD Pro you'd be well versed and confident in what you're getting into. The 2GR has been around for a little while now. It's not a great motor compared to the 1GR.

It sounds either the new TSB for the transmission shifting strategy update is what you need. That or a regear. If your dealer looks up your VIN and says you're ineligible for the update that's one thing, but if they're incompetent "that's normal" -men, then find another dealer.

When I said that I took it to the dealer to be looked at, that was the short version. I took it twice, with the second time being a specialist and I specifically mentioned the TSB and this forum. He had my truck connected to his laptop for 2 hours and he said it was up to date on everything. I asked could he reflash it and he said that it wouldn't change a thing. He did say that if enough people complain then maybe they will come up with an update for the shift points on the transmission. But really, that is not going to help because it's a weak engine with no torque unless it is spinning at 5000 rpm. I know that now, but no, I didn't research or read, I just trusted Toyota to have a good product like I'd been riding in the last 10 years prior in the two new ones I had bought previously.
I'm hoping that with Ford coming out with the Ranger and Jeep coming out with the Gladiator that it will maybe make Toyota come up with a better engine. I regularly go to mines and muddy roads, and I also go out west to old mines that are on blm roads that really aren't maintained and where if you break down help is a 40 mile walk with no cell service. I stupidly thought that buying the best new Tacoma truck that Toyota had for sale would be an improvement over my 2013 model but I sure was wrong.

The Voodoo Tundra is nice to look at. If you’re going to get one, I’d do it before 2021 when they probably definitely switch to a DIT V6.

If you’re sold on Pro, 2020 model will also be available in two cab configs as well, if you don’t want the crew max.

If you can do both that would be the best. I have a 04 taco and 14 Tundra. Taco is better at wheeling because of size but Tundra is better at everything else. The Tundra is pretty good off-road too have done Hells Revenge in Moab the complete loop in mine. Best thing about Tundra is even with 1000 lbs or more in the bed the truck doesn't care. Lots of power and comfortable smooth ride and reliablity is as good as Taco.

You do realize how junky those interiors and pretty much anything besides the Cummins is? If all you wanted was towing ability and didn't care about ANYTHING else, fine have your Chrysler. Just know it's junk (other than the drive train but even those transfer cases blow up quite often, I dunno only decent thing I've seen or worked on with those Rams is the Cummins)
