2001 tacoma 2.7 liter 4wd manual trans. I recently bought this truck from a friend, it originally had an idle issue, idling as high as 2,500 rpm he had the throttle body replaced which seemed to mostly fix the issue, idling at about 950-1000 after. However it will not start now without pushing on the gas peddle. It does not idle at all you need to continuously press on the peddle to keep it going shows no sign of trying to idle if you release rpm’s go straight to zero. I’d appreciate any ideas on what it could be, the iac was not replaced with the throttle body so that was my first thought or a vacuum leak but all the hoses look fine.

Pretty much any original rubber component on a 23 year old truck is due for replacement, vacuum hoses included.

Get yourself some EFI safe cleaner or propane and spray/release it around the various hoses and see if the idle goes up. The brake booster can fail as well, resulting in an internal vacuum leak that's hard to detect.

Have you done any other diagnostic, or just been focused on the idle? Changed out the fuel filter, etc?

What Andy said and you can also use water to check for vac leaks, misting lightly around hoses etc to see if rpm retards. But you will prob need someone to hold the throttle open at a consistent level since you said it won’t idle. IAC is a definite culprit but even if its stuck fully closed you should idle fine when the engine is up to op temp, with no other demands on like AC on etc. It’s worth the effort to chase it as those engines run great when all is in working order. Good luck to you.

Thanks guys, I’ve got a fuel filter I’m replacing today, and I’ll check for vacuum leaks with some EFI safe cleaner. The hard part is just getting someone to hold the throttle in while I do it!
