Hello everyone, recently purchased a new 2022 Tacoma TRD auto. Truck has a strange noise (similar to a growl) when coming up to a stop and downshifting; usually happens around 25-30 km/h and sounds exactly like a jake brake; can be heard over the stereo. Time it lasts varies from 1 to 5 seconds. Does not happen all the time. For the life of me I thought I was being followed around town by an old dump truck. Truck shifts fine, it's really odd. Anyone care to take a stab at this one? Thank you

Are you sure it's not just the exhaust growling when the revs bump up as it downshifts while decelerating?

Pretty certain its not in the exhaust, doesn't seem harsh enough. Literally sounds like an engine brake.

Could be many things. I would let the dealer take care of it. That is the beauty of buying a vehicle with warranty!

I agree about letting the dealer handle it, it's just a colossal PITA to make an appt, be without my wheels, whah whah whah. I'm hoping somebody on here has had the same issue so I could possible figure out if this is something small to rectify or something that needs to come apart. Hate having a new rig torn into.

It's not the ABS, owned enough 4Runners over the years to know the smashing and crashing noise coming from the front end, first time my son heard the ABS he laughed is ass off lol...

Do you have the TRD Off-road with the ATRAC electronic boosted brake master?

Could be the pressure pump I hear it sometimes sounds a little like a quiet mini jake brake.

It's a TRD Sport C package. That is what I'm wondering if it's something like that or in the Atkinson Cycle. I've heard a lot of funny noises front different rigs over the years and this one has me stumped.

My v6 engine/exhaust when new got a little loud when when you whipped the chipmunks, but as i got more miles the trucks entire power band seemed to change overnight. its like toyota installed a break in chip. Today the truck runs smooth and quite, shifts spot on. Couldn't be more happy with this truck.

Totally understandable. Though this might be a new one..

Think you could upload a short video of the noise to YouTube and post here? I know earlier 3rd gens had the whole diff howl thing, but never heard anyone describe it as a Jake brake haha

I just found those videos not too long ago haha

The truck does do engine braking. To narrow down if that's it, drive around with ECT turned on and see if the noise goes away.

Don't get me wrong, I love the truck, been a Toyota guy since my two first gen 4Runners, this is just one of those weird scenarios. Might have to tighten my chin strap and book it in to the dealer. Knew I was going to regret getting the auto lol...

Well ktbell44, you are on to something; drove home from work with the ECT on, no noise; switched it off halfway through my drive, noise came back; what's your theory?

A good dealer should give you a loaner for something like this. They might have to try and diagnose it while you wait, but if they find something, no reason they shouldn't loan you a vehicle.

I'd say it's engine braking then. ECT doesn't use engine braking.

ECT uses engine braking too. it just raises the shift points and holds lower gears longer.
