have you done plugs before? plugs done wrong would absolutely cause that problem.

Run ok prior to clutch work?

    Clutch interlock switch messed up

Why did you swap the starter?

    Starter not properly installed?

    Out of gas

dead fuel pump or fuel pump relay

so it wasn't starting before plugs either?

bad alternator means the engine doesn't charge the battery. click click click no start. boost. runs for a bit and dies. your buddy sounds like my sister... "might be the alternator" (only vehicle part I think she can name)

Could even be bad gas. Hard to say without knowing more.

paint a better picture of what has happened and in what order and I bet you get it sorted out here.

Knowing at which point the truck would not start - before, during, after, etc. each of the 'fixes' you did is needed to help pinpoint why it might not be starting.

crank and no fire is either spark or fuel. One or the other . Sometimes no spark because the engine is not sensing rotation.

Why would you suspect the clutch? That seems......................interesting.
