Generally, as long as the Ecu is receiving a crank and cam position signal, it will provide spark and attempt to run the engine. Though different engine management systems have different requirements.

If you're timing belt was off by even one tooth, would not that prevent the engine from sealing to provide enough compression for combustion? I'm thinking that as the compression tester is a check valve, it's only recording the cylinder pressure for a fraction of the time that it normally would.

Have you used a vacuum gauge to make sure there is manifold vacuum being generated at crank?

Just to rule out idle air flow, you can use the throttle adjustment to ohh so slightly crack the throttle while you're starting it.

I am sure the timing chain is way off because the marks on the crankshaft pulley do not indicate top dead center I must have a bad pulley. I determined top dead center by sticking a straw in the spark plug hole and rotating the engine by hand. When the straw was at its highest point(top dead center) the mark on the pulley was not lined up with the 0 on the timing mark. I am not sure how it made compression that way but it did. Hopefully the valves did not contact the Pistons.

Did you set cam timing with pulley or mark on crank gear?

There is no reason to do that. You should only be using the cam and crank gear, and chain markers, for timing.

I agree. I only did it that way because I had already installed my oil pan and front cover. I really thought the crank pulley would give me top dead center. The pulley was brand new and it fit perfectly. My guess is that it was a defective pulley.

If this was a German engine, you would have destroyed the valves already. Yours will be fine, its non-interference.

I'm a little confused. The crank pulley has a groove to fit over the key on the crankshaft. Is the timing mark on the new pulley not oriented correctly? I know some pulleys have rubber between the outer and inner part to damp vibrations and the pulley can possibly spin out of orientation when the rubber gets old, but I've never seen this personally, so I might not know what I'm talking about.

I ordered a new one and the grooves are not in the proper location and yes it's keyed onto the crankshaft. My old one separated at the rubber part and cut into my oil pump housing that's why I ordered a new one. I had never seen that before either.

I am not sure where the key is because I haven't removed the pulley yet. I will check it when I get the new one.

not sure but according to manual it uses the plated link method. Odd colored link lines up with marks.4cyl timing.jpg
