Tacoma Work Edition?

Cut 2x6's to fit in the notches in the bed so you can fit full sheets of plywood or drywall in the bed on top of the wheel wells.

OP, rather than try to make the Tacoma something it's not, buy a full size. They already do everything you've listed.

 

Hilux would be nice. I agree with OP current setup is too weak and not everybody want fullsize. Small truck the can carry a lot is better deal for most people.
Only way to get that with our truck is to toss axles and suspension from Tundra in that thing and box the frame as much as possible

 

I've got that set up right now in my truck.

They weren't stupid when they made the Tacoma. Just drunk when they designed the disposable wheel bearings and fucked from factory Front Diff Bearing.

 

Even then, you're still not legally able to haul any more than a stock Tacoma...

I don't get why people buy a small or mid-sized truck then complain because it doesn't have the capabilities of a full sized. If you need a heavy hauler, get something that's built for it. It's not Toyota's fault you bought the wrong truck. No small or mid sized truck has ever been able to fit full sheets of plywood or drywall between the wheel wells. Mid sized trucks have grown up a lot in the last 10 years and that's why they're dying out. They've encroached on full size territory both in capacity and price. Your better off buying a stripped down full size work truck if that's what you need. They're not that much bigger than the Tacoma.

Why? I haul plywood and drywall laying flat all the time... throw a strap around the back edge so it can't slide backwards and you're good to go. I lay them flat because when hauling drywall I don't want that much of it upsupported hanging off the tailgate and the tailgate can dent the drywall also. I know you can put a piece of plywood under them but why haul extra materials when you don't have to?

 

I just replaced my stock crap suspension with the OME one , all good now .

 

What springs do you have in the back? Our stock 5lug regular cabs at work sag like crazy with a similar shell and tools in them.

Our local LOWES has a work outfitted Tundra on display right outside the contractors entrance. Too bad it is there from a DB dealership.

 

also, the op stated putting the plywood flat between the wheel wells. you would need to widen the truck to do that. a wider more proportional truck would be a tundra as well..

 

On the 2nd gen Tacomas if you put a 2X6 in the side bed indents across the bed you can lay a sheet of plywood flat in the truck. It will be above the wheel wells. I do it all the time.
