I am considering buying a 09 2wd regular cab. Just a base model 4 cylinder - manual tranny. White with the black bumpers and grille, roll up windows, etc...

I am wanting to get something to drive back and forth to work, and something I don't have to put premium gas in.

I don't see much discussed here about the base 2wd regular cab models. Are these reliable? Anything I should look for? This particular one I am looking at has 68k miles.

Great truck you will love it. Everyone in here is going to try and talk you into a V6 4X4. Ignore them and get what you need / want. The 2.7 I4 engine is bullet proof and is more than what I need on a daily basis. Any specific reason you are going manual trans? I really like the 4 speed automatic, It also has a level dipstick for the transmission fluid level.

    Thanks for feedback.

Main reason I am going for the base 2wd 4 cylinder is for gas mileage, reliablity, and no way to haul anything now. I have three other vehicles that all take premium gas and that I am trying to keep the mileage down on (S2000, Evo, and Civic Si).

When I was growing up my dad bought a new 1985 2wd SR5 5 speed "xtra cab" with the then new EFI motor. That thing never gave us any problems. I was hoping a repeat performance from this 09 base model I am looking at.

If you even might need 4x4 it is great to have but if there is no chance you will ever need it then what you are suggesting should be fine.

2wd will be just fine. Keep a set of chains in it if it snows where you live/travel.

    Clazzio seat covers,
2WD regular cab with I4 as a daily driver is a great choice ... I had an '06 and the only reason I moved up was the need for more interior storage ... the AT got me about 23 mpg around town ... HIGH 20's on the highway ... if i recall correctly the AT got better mileage (rear end ratio) than the manual ...you may want to consider that ... good luck and let us know.

My father used to work for the ny state DOT. Over 2 decades he had 2 base 2wd stick shift 4cyl toyota trucks that he drove all over the place... On the roads for work, back and forth from ny to penna, (where he lived part time)... Each of those trucks went 200k+ with literally little more than oil changes every 3000 miles or so and new tires as needed. He ran snows in the winter, of course. I honestly done even know if he ever replaced the brakes in those trucks... It was A LOT of highway miles.

So yea, you'll be fine. Those trucks are amazing.

That is the perfect little truck for trips to work.
