There was a thread on here a couple weeks ago about trading a 3rd gen for a wrangler and plenty of people on here took the chance to bitch and moan about the 3rd gen some more... was even told how much better jeeps are despite me actually having BOTH a 2017 Tacoma and 2017 Wrangler in my driveway.

I admitted then for rock crawling and technical trails yes the wrangler is better... for cruising the beach naked (the jeep not me lol) and picking up girls the jeep is better... but the truck itself is a total piece of shit and I don't trust it enough to take it on a true offroad trip to the middle of nowhere (like Scorpion Bay or even San Felipe)

Well took the jeep out for her first desert run to Ocotillo Wells this weekend and she must've heard me talking shit online because she took a dump and left us stranded. My trusty Tacoma towed her all the way back to civilization where we had to wait 5 hours for a tow truck to take her back to San Diego.

Jeep has only 3k miles! Couldn't handle the heat.

This is my 4th Tacoma and I've been to Ocotillo at least 100 times with my trucks over the last 15 years, none of my Tacoma's EVER left me stranded, even my 1st and 2nd Gens that had 150k+ miles.

I don't give a shit how good at rock crawling a rig is, if it leaves you stranded hundreds of miles away from home its NOT a good offroader end of story. So I hereby proclaim the Tacoma to be a better offroad rig than the Wrangler :crapstorm:

Yeah yeah I know this is anecdotal and some people on here have had CPS problems leave them stranded as well. But it concretely reinforces my predisposed view that Chrysler products suck balls so I don't care this is all the proof I need to never buy a Chrysler product again.

Fuck Chrysler products and thank god the jeep is a lease, almost ruined an otherwise awesome trip :bikewheelie::bikewhoops::mudding:

When does lease end for the Jeep?

What happened to the Jeep to get you stranded?

2 more years left on the lease the only good thing is it'll probably have equity at the end, wranglers always do (just like Tacomas).

First I thought I just had a bad fan relay, the wrangler has electric fans and I noticed the fan wasn't running properly (was going on and off even at full operating temp with A/C on), the temp gauge never moved above center but when I checked the actual coolant and trans temp they were both running hot (210-215) so shut her down to cool off. Took the Tacoma and motorcycles out for a while then went back to the jeep to limp her back... didn't even reach full operating temp (was at 175 coolant temp) and it just died while driving about 30mph. Tried to restart it and would turn over but just wouldn't start, even after cooling all the way down for several hours. Unplugged the battery and let it sit overnight to clear the ECU and in the morning she fired right up! Immediately started driving towards the highway but she didn't even make it a mile before shutting off while driving again, then wouldn't start at all. At that point even unplugging the battery and resetting ECU didn't work, would spin but not even attempt to start.

Didn't ever actually overheat max temp was 215 before I shut her down on Saturday, another weird thing is I don't trust the Wrangler's temp gauge, it would register dead center from 170-215, at 215 it should tell you its over operating temp but it read as if it was perfect.

Current 3rd gen owner that had a rubicon... not really comparable in any way. My buddy did take his 3rd gen on every trail I did in my built rubicon.

So is it at dealer getting looked at under warranty?

Yeah Jeep resale is amazing like Tacoma. However, what I don't get is, if Tacoma resale is based on real or perceived reliability, what is Jeep resale based on?

Seems like every time I’m at an off-road park I see a broken down jeep

MARKERTING, its based on marketing lol. And that they don't ever really update the jeep, the 2017 wrangler looks almost exactly like a 2007 wrangler.

Yeah its at the dealer now so should know by the end of today what happened.

Another frustrating part is Jeep roadside assistance wanted to tow it to Brawley CA which was 50 miles away (but opposite direction of San Diego), san diego was 85 miles away so they charged me $200 to have it towed to san diego instead of brawley. Def gonna file a dispute on that with Jeep.

    This will end well...

I am not really a fan of JK's however TJ and YJ's were great. I had a TJ in high school and a short while after. I beat the crap out of it and never had an issue. Few buddies had YJ's and still have them with few repairs, I had more issues with my first gen Tundra.

Personally I do not like driving Jeeps as an every day vehicle since they just aren't that comfortable. Both my brother and mom have the newer JK's with the pentastar with plenty of miles on them and they take 10ish hour trips quite often with no concern about reliability. Yes, I realize highway is different than off road...

Do I think these will end up as reliable as the older inline 4.0L, no. However I do think they'll last longer than the 3.8 in the previous JK's.

I got stuck in Ocotillo in a Hummer back in 07. Wasn't fun trying to find something getting it towed, since regular tow service wouldn't help. What a 'fun" two days that was. Been in Land Cruiser/LX470/LX570 since then, when I am in OW, and never had any issues.

Hope you get it squared away soon.

I’m kinda interested in why you chose a 2017 vehicle to go rock crawling in?

My first (and last) Jeep (CR7) taught me that lesson. Too bad. I love US Made, but I like making it home more. Oh, one more thing, I did put a decal on my Taco rollbar made for Jeep.

I actually don't rock crawl I'm a desert and Baja kind of guy.

I'm in the car business and got the Jeep for a ridiculous lease offer, got a $40k jeep for the payment of a base model Corolla and it's almost guaranteed to have equity at the end.

I still love taking it to the beach and around town with the doors off but that's all its really good for... mall err... BEACH crawling.
