At an entry to merge stop/yield sign leading onto traffic who's speed limit is 55 (people are obviously going faster), I've had to put the pedal-to-the-metal and was impressed with the acceleration.

Yeah, there was a slight delay but when the motion engaged, it was as fast as expected from a truck.

There were drivers moving to the fast lane thinking they would be on my tail right away but instead, we were neck & neck.

This experience was done without using ECT or S-drive and I have an OTT Tune.

I dont really consider it a truck if its not an SR/SR5, the payload is too low and the towing capacity es no bueno. It more of a UTV that you can drive on the highway.

    Horsepower aint bad, torque sucks.

I have been temporarily driving my
Old jeep Cherokee around since my wife is driving the taco. Boy is it nice to have that torque at lower RPMs AND much lighter vehicle. I wish the Tacoma had a straight six with the low end torque. It would be a big improvement

Maybe your hack up the frame drop bracket lift made your '17 lighter and more aerodynamic than everyone else's?

Oh the dear old slant six can definitely exceed the speed limit. My brother and I took my granny’s Plymouth with a slant six and auto to 100 mph!

Hyundai Santa Cruz 2.5t has higher manufacturer's hp and torque numbers over 4th gen Tacoma 2.4t iForceMax nonhybrid manufacturer's hp and torque numbers. The numbers are very close.

I don't know about hybrid supplemental power, is it real power?

I don't know I tow a 2500lb boat while on 34's and it does fine for what it is. It's a truck not a race car. I'll get there when I get there and always make it back home after

I've done a fair amount with my tacoma already. Just the other week I stacked it with over a dozen 4'x8' sheets of 3/4'' pressure treated plywood.

You guys think a 3rd gen is slow, you should pull a few mountain passes on the highway, in my 2nd gen reg cab! lol Just picked up a 3rd gen and can't wait to get it built up and retire the reg cab.

I bought my 3rd Gen just a couple weeks ago on the day the 4th gen was announced. I sold my 2000 4Runner to get myself a brand new Tacoma.

My Tacoma compared to my old 4Runner, the power difference is obvious. However, I think all this power talk depends on where you want to spend your time in the RPM range. I bought this truck to do truck stuff, not sports car stuff. Of course I’d want my truck to have the ability to do it all, it’s the reasons why I bought the truck, utility and capability.

I don’t find myself needing to go fast, though. When I do need it I gas it. In general though, I’m in the lower rpm range mostly. That’s my use for it though. Others want different uses for their vehicles.

I just don’t understand when people say it’s underpowered. Compared to what? Other vehicles within its class? Sure. If those companies designed their trucks to do something better than the other that’s what it’s going to do. I sized up the Colorado and Ridgeline (Oh God) before buying the Tacoma. At the end of the day I figured which car will I see going strong in 5/10/20 years? What looks better IMO? What do I need it to do?

I haven’t towed anything with it yet and I’m sure I’ll feel it. I guess I’m just happy because everything is fast than my old tow truck I drove. 2000 4 speed MT International. Boy that thing would go 0-60 in 60 minutes but it could drive up a wall.

I bought mine new a few months ago. I dumped a 3.5 ecoboost F150. The Ford had power and torque alright. Way more than I needed since I don't tow. It screamed off the line if that is what I wanted to do. I don't. I need reliable transportation that can do light truck work from time to time. I also wanted a vehicle that was fun to drive, easy to park, manageable on congested city streets, and gives road feedback. So I got a Tacoma, V6 manual trans and I couldn't be happier. Plenty of power. It's all about expectations and purchasing a vehicle to match.

Part of the problem these days are the way cars and trucks are marketed. Just look at the commercials - everthing it out kicking up dust and spinning donuts. Who drives that way? Not me.

Now if I had the money, I would also have a GR Corolla.

It's not the peak HP numbers but the torque curve that makes the truck feel underpowered. I had a 2000 F150 with the 5.4 V8 and it felt more powerful than the Tacoma despite weighing much more, having less peak HP and only having a 4 speed.

My last truck was a 3.5L v6 that made 450hp, so there’s that.

I will say I don’t find the Tacoma particularly underpowered for what it is though.

Anyone who thinks these are slow needs to drive a fj80 Land Cruiser. It’s literally the slowest thing I’ve ever owned and to add insult, only gets 10mpgs.
