    Buying a new Tacoma and wondering about securing ropes below front bumper. I had hooks installed below the bumper of my Chevy Silverado. Ropes from canoes extend over the hood to these hooks.
    Looking at images of Tacomas on line and not seeing many using front tie-down ropes.
    Anyone have hooks added or do you just tie down where you can???
    Any paddlers out there? Thanks.

    30+ years of canoeing and transporting canoes.... mostly off road. I've never tied down the bow or stern. Just two straps along the hull onto the rack. Never had an issue with canoe moving/shifting.

    Me either. I read somewhere once that bow and stern straps are really only useful in super high crosswinds or catastrophic rack failure.

    Ditch light brackets are an option for tie downs. Using bow and stern lines makes me feel better when driving on the highway, especially when it’s windy.

    Diy Hood loops here: keeps everything secure and gives me a visual on how the boat is doing. Made from some straps I had laying around and ten cents worth of electrical tape. Loop it, tape it, drill it, then put the fender screw through it.

    Good point on the visual aid to let you know the boat is OK. The only time I wish I had a moon roof is when I have my kayak on the rack. Seeing the lines staying in place lets me relax and enjoy the drive. I am a bit paranoid after having someone’s poorly tied down kayak almost come through my windshield!

    All the things!
    Use some nylon straps (old ratchet straps) and make your own.

    https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/seattle-sports-sherpak-hood-loops-2-pack?ds_e=GOOGLE&ds_c=Cabelas|Shopping|Smart|Boating|General|NAud|TopPerf|NMT&gclid=Cj0KCQjw9ZGYBhCEARIsAEUXITUGB7DtyXKEvlXfbXbSLcbK3rIt72Orwzud55mD_4CjSFMRQyaIcRkaAppZEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

    Basically, a loop of nylon strap, that fits between the hood and the fender gap. Just pull an existing fender bolt and reinstall it through the strap loop.

    Edit: I did this on my old Jeep XJ and it worked like a charm.

    Thanks for the replies. Had forgotten about the hood loop options. Had seen those before. The body armor bumper looks nice but $550 on top of all the other things I’ll need (possibly new rack system), might shy me away from that option.
    I agree that two quality straps are enough to hold boats securely; however, I agree with the highway comments too. Have noticed on interstate that in the right spot behind a big rig, certain crosswinds are created that definitely give canoes a lot of pressure.
    If just for the reassurance factor, I’ve been tying down for many years. Thanks again. Now wish my truck would arrive at the dealer!

    Agree, I have 2 15' kayaks so I'll be using a receiver mounted rack with the roof rack. Where braking or accelerating are a concern I run a strap from the bow and stern to the rack for a long haul.

    @vicali do you have a side profile shot of the canoe with the camper shell?

    simple webbing strap from the top of the radiator support, can even leave it under the hood when not using it.
    Can be seen just above the passenger side driving light.

    Yes, yes I do;

    [IMG]

    Because of the rocker on our Prospector I've made brackets to lift the gunwhale mounts off the bars to clear the canopy at the back;
    [IMG]

    We carry it on a Prinsu on the cab because we tow an RV and needed to have no overhang at the back. Otherwise I would've racked the canopy as well.

    Do you have a part number for those eye bolts/nuts?

    Hmm,

    That's a BigFoot Pro setup from Malone, mounted on DIY aluminum brackets and welded spacers. The eye bolts come with the Prinsu, but if I were adding them I would get these instead.

    Those are not the eyebolts I got with my Prinsu. I got SS 304's that are nuts, but I can't fit a single ratchet strap hook through them. It uses a SS carriage bolt to sit in the track, points up and tightens down. But now there is a bolt sticking halfway through the eyelet. Hasn't been a huge issue since Wrap the canoe straps around the frame of the rack anyways.

    Nice setup!
