Hey guys, just stumbled across this thread - I’m live in Savage. Took a trip out to Appleton last weekend and had a good time.

Planning on heading up to Spider and the Foothills this weekend. Anyone gonna be in the area as well?

Also, anyone looking for 4 3rd Gen TRD Off Road wheels - I have a set with maybe 1,000 miles on them and a OEM Tri-fold tonneau cover with hardware for sale.

Pretty sure I saw the same Tacoma today at about 1:40 pm on Stagecoach Trail north of Afton. I was headed in opposite direction on my Africa Twin moto. Desert sand with soft topper. Who is it?

pretty sure the dealer tightened the canister filter on my truck using an impact... still amazed nothing broke in the process other than my knuckles trying to get it off. So much for 20 ft lbs On the canister and 10 for the drain

alright, native Minnesotans, i have been trying to figure out how your state makes the Toyota 'cold climate list' while states around and near you do not? and i am stumped

do you get a greater than average amount of precipitation in the winter that Iowa and the Dakotas do not?

so why does MN use more road chemicals than IA?
is there more precipitation from the thousands of lakes? i.e. lake effect ... but those lakes are mostly frozen and no evaporation?
or is the salt just thrown down because the temps get colder lol but it gets just as cold in ND i would think?

... I am just curious as a cat is all :anonymous:

The answer is yes, it is “colder.”

Why? Trust me, I’m a geographer who minored in geophysics and climatology.

Edit: the nerd in me is like “oooo ooooo” I know this!!!

The socially aware person in me is saying “shut up, ain’t nobody wants to hear you nerd”

so what does 'colder' have to do with it?
do the roads just spontaneously get 'slicker' when the temps get to the extreme lows?

i would think that IA has more of a thaw and re-freeze cycle than MN does :notsure:

    It’s a combination of things.

MN sits on the southern terminus of the Canadian Shield, and a high occurrence of ferric basalts and other igneous and metamorphic formations. This higher density causes a lower rate of thermal conductivity at the asthenosphere and lithosphere boundary. In addition, the subsequent gravitational anomaly created causes a “cold spot” in the convection currents within the upper asthenosphere. As such, less energy is transmitted to the surface than anywhere else in the continental US that sees our type of weather patterns. To illustrate, here is a gradient map for use of geothermal heating sources.

    7A891C35-C56F-4245-87F1-AF06F00F402C.jpg

As you can see MN is covered in dark green, which almost exactly follows the Canadian Shield, with the “coldest” blue sections being the locations with the highest occurrence of high density ferric material. If you were to overlay this map with that of upper mantle convection currents and gravitational values, it’s almost exacting.

Now, what does this all mean? Our part of this planet doesn’t have much in the way of radiant floor heating.

We also sit just south of the polar jet, and because of the above, we encourage the arctic air to drop right down the red river valley and freeze our asses off. As the season begin to warm, the convection of the atmosphere caused two polar vortices to for at about our latitude. One over us, the other over a portion of Siberia called the Siberian Traps. Typically in the winter the polar vortices are weaker and will split into a number of smaller low pressure areas causing a more broad spread of cold/warm boundary layers across the hemisphere. In the case of last year, the higher warm air flows caused the traditionally weak and split currents to reform and allow a large drop of arctic airflow push south.

Basically, we leave the windows open.

There are some other things going on with topography and westerlies that get too far into fluid dynamics for me to remember enough to detail it.

So what does that mean for us and our cracking pavement, with relation to Iowa having more freeze thaw cycles?

    Pavement is not a solid, but rather a very viscous fluid. As such, the warmer it gets the more malleable it is. Colder it gets, the more resistant to movement it gets. Since our springs show a much higher variance in near surface air temps between day and night and day to day, we see more extreme freeze-thaw cycling than IA that maintains a smaller range but more frequent event. This and the pavement itself is more malleable due to the constant warming from below in comparison. MN ice forms faster, and therefor it isn’t allowed to flow as the slower forming IA ice. The pavement is moving slower, so;

IA = more flowing ice + more malleable pavement

MN = less flowing ice + less flowing pavement.

There is some variables with albedo and solar radiation coupled with latitude, but I am already nerding out and I’m already annoyed with myself for you. So...

We don’t have radiant floor heating and we leave the windows open. Because of this our it’s colder faster, and we poor millions of pounds of ice on the roads because we are afraid of ice and studded tires.

    /nerd

Not to break up the GEO session happening BUT....

I got slammed into on my drivers side, quaterpanel, wheel/suspension, and front end by a lovely, uninsured driver.

It's all getting replaced with OEM parts at a very reputable repair shop. ...However...

I have bought and was going to put on a lift kit but they had a hell of a time getting it back into alignment and I am wondering if I would be making a big mistake by putting one on now that shes been wrecked.

    Anyone have thoughts, first-hand knowledge?

I feel skeptical and think that if there is any residual problem that it will only be exacerbated by a lift.

I'd love some pointers, or any thing at this point.

P.S. if any one is curious about/interested in purchasing in the lift:

    • 2016-Present Toyota Tacoma Old Man Emu Suspension Lift Kit - Medium Load 2"
    • with SPC Upper Control Arms (Light Racing) --camber/castor adjustments
    • also have the Diff drop kit

How dare you get on topic!!!!

Don’t know much about 3g, but I’ll lay out some common questions.

Which front springs did you go with?

Stock upper and lower control arms?
