In any case, I suppose it's possible to cause more soil compaction with a small wheeled vehicle if you drove it enough over the whole surface, but why are we worried about it in this context? I think we got off in the weeds.

I don't think those relatively small ruts are that big of a deal either, because they are going to grade it, dump sand/gravel on it, and then pave it. Plus one pass over those ruts by an earth mover I'm guessing will flatten them right out of existence just like the other ruts I've seen out there caused by the construction workers getting to work in their trucks.

To me a construction site is like a strip mine. The earth has been scorched and reshaped by man. Why be worried about possible environment damage done by a single pickup truck?

That is not at all how things work. They don't just bring in more soil to toss on top to grow grass. That would be insanely expensive and cause a whole lot of other issues as well. The worst of which would be that water would be incapable of infiltrating into the soil at all so instead of cities having issues with just the runoff from all the concrete you would have the water going literally no where but through man made drainage and the top soil they just bring in to toss on top of the compacted ground would just wash away.

You are completely missing my original point. You're damaging land that is not yours. That is the primary issue. That is not something you should ever be doing even if it is a construction area. It gives people that drive modified trucks and offroad vehicles a bad name. That kind of stuff is why a lot of public and private land gets closed off completely to the prospect of offroad trails and places for us to recreate and have fun.

Well hey howdy guys. Idk if I've posted in this thread. Been a while if I have...

Recently moved from st louis park to Lakeville/Apple Valley/Farmington area.

Keeping my eye out for construction site shortcuts during the muddy season ;)

    Still not gonna happen.

Also if you winch forward, it doesn’t appear there is any solid surface ahead of you..

I’d recommend taking a vehicle recovery class. Or read bobs books. I’m sure this won’t be the last time you get stuck and some knowledge can go a long way.

Well like I said, I've never owned a winch and so I was curious what people thought about the situation. Are you saying a 3' diameter concrete pipe buried 6' into the ground (and probably connected to another concrete pipe) would pull towards me? Maybe we are just not understanding each other.

There was solid ground directly in front of me and that is where they winched me to. I was just in soft hole that was maybe 20' long. The area behind me looks bad in the picture, but I was actually driving through that fairly effortlessly.

BTW, I have been stuck 20+ times just this winter, so I do have some experience; just not with a winch. Also I really hadn't had much practice with the hi-lift jack, but I have definitely used other jacks in similar situations.

I believe 4/3. I’ve got a few people confirmed that works for

Did they pull you forward or backwards? I was assuming backwards cuz you can’t see the truck anywhere ahead of you.

He pulled me forwards. I would have driven from that point, but he had 100 yards of cable to respool and he wanted some tension on it. It was probably for the best because there were a few more soft spots on the way out.

You’ve been stuck more this winter than I have in 34yrs.

It’s not the equipment’s fault, I assure you.

Yes, that part of the has been finished. Before the tow truck arrived. my plan was to go forward as well. It looked like the path of least resistance because the rear of the truck was dug down deep enough that the hitch was contacting the ground. It was much easier to dig out the front and get traction boards under it going forward.

If you aren't getting stuck, you aren't pushing your limits. Note also that by stuck I am including cases where I don't need to get out of the truck to get unstuck.

    The levels of stuckness:

    1) Get unstuck without leaving the truck
    2) Need to get out of the truck and access the situation, then manage to drive out
    3) Need to use recovery gear
    4) Need to get help

There is a point where “pushing your limits” crosses over into the land of “shit you shouldn’t even try”. Suffice to say, planting your truck to the point of requiring specialized recovery efforts, while trespassing and damaging private property, crosses that line.

But, sure, you can belittle my ability, knowledge, and experience knowing nothing of it. I don’t need to surpass the limits of common sense, nor legality, to “push my limits.”

If you are seeking a way to make modifications that will help these situations, maybe this will help?

I not aware of any private property being damaged. This is a public road we are talking about. We are really off in the weeds. Note also that the construction company(s) was aware of my presence and when I talked to them in the past they were not concerned with my presence.
