Our illustrious leader and host @tcBob has given his official thumbs-up. Operation CHALLENGE COIN is a go for launch!

Please PM me designs for sides, and when we've got a few then a vote thread will go up for a week or so. I'll then get updated quotes from a few vendors, the best deal will be chosen (really want costs low), and then the group buy will go forward.

Thanks everyone for your input so far. I am overwhelmed by the great ideas, positive feedback, and creative designs that have flown about since Friday. I can't wait to see the candidates come in.

Hello there, fellow TWers! I recently decided that what I really, really wanted to have a TW challenge coin on my person at the next meet. I have over 100 from my years in the service, and thought that a TW coin would be a perfect addition. I floated the idea past @tcBob and he thinks it's a great idea too.

If you don't know what a challenge coin is there is a really great history write-up on Mental Floss here.

Some examples:

I've already reached out to a trusted vendor (they made all my unit coins and did fantastic work) for pricing, and I'll share those details later. I'm not sure yet, but depending on complexity we can expect between $6 and $10 a coin, plus shipping.

If all goes well, the plan is to open up the design of a TW coin to you all. Designs will be discussed, argued over, revised, and eventually voted on in a brutal "Highlander" style competition until there is only one. Once we have a finalized design that's ready, we move into a group buy.

There is a minimum purchase requirement on the initial order. Members wanting coins would join the list, and when either we've met the minimum order quantity or a set time period has elapsed then we enter the payment collection phase. I'm thinking "PayPal" as the easiest method. Once payment is collected the order is placed, they ship the bulk order to me, and I get a long weekend of stuffing envelopes followed by a heavy trip to the post office.

So...who would be interested in a TacomaWorld coin? Who has ideas for a TW coin? Who has any challenge coin stories or pictures they want to share?

Am I reading Cap's update correctly? Does it say 18 Jan 2018? Does that mean that the coin will be done then? Or did he mistake the year and mean 2017?

The OP was updated Jan 18, 2017 so I'm assuming it was a typo. I believe that was the update that we could move ahead with the process, and then the other thread was started with voting

Some things have come up in both my personal and professional life that are taking up a lot more time than were expected or anticipated. We are continuing to press forward with the coin and I appreciate everyone's patience. While it was my original intention to handle logistics personally to keep costs down, I no longer have the time (or guest room) that I used to. More details will be coming shortly as we get the final proof worked out and quoted.

Okay, finally have a scheduled day off. That I worked half of. But overtime $$ still spends.

I'm checking on the order, how to handle payment, and what the shipping situation is going to be.

The minimum order is 500 for the production run. I'm going to get 4, so I think that 500 will go pretty fast.

Thoughts?

@CaptAmerica when it's time to start it off, set up a thread similar to the TW patch thread. Everyone can add their name to the list and pay by PayPal. He color-coded the orders as they were paid and when they were sent. I thought it was pretty efficient way of doing it.
