    Quick lessons.
    1) There's no such thing as a prerunner 4x4. Prerunner = 2wd
    2) All TRD models come with a rear diff locker (both prerunner and 4x4).

I say go 4x4, but that's only because of the style of wheeling I do.

Ok. I am glad I put the specifics up. Thanks for the clarification. I just sent the two owners e-mails asking for them to explain exactly what they own. lol. I was looking at 4x4 trucks because of the New England winters. Do you know if I would be ok with a rear-diff lock? Does TRD mean V6? Is there a 4 cyl TRD Off Road?

    Thanks again for the help?

Check very carefully for rust before buying. I would get a 4x4 with TRD for the locker. Just take your time and shop around, you will find a good one.

I can't swear to the motor with the TRD option. All the TRD's I've seen with the 1st gens are all V6, but that's only the one's I know of. I know that if it's a true TRD, you'll get the Rear Diff Locker and a gas tank skid plate. Be carefull with people that claim to have TRD when they just put on some fucking stickers. The true tell sign is the locker. No locker, then it's not a TRD.

When you engage the rear locker, your ABS is automatically disabled. Not fun on winter roads, especially 2wd. I'd stick with 4wd considering you're location.

check/ask for maintenance records. one of the more expensive job is a timing belt replacement. look for records of routine transmission flush.

i currently have ~227k miles and have not had any issues at all. my brother and i do all the maintenance ourselves so i don't really have official records myself;) so don't let that deter you if you're buying from private party. gauge the seller and his/her character.

take your time and you'll find a gem. it's a great little truck and good luck with your search.

Yes, if the frame rusted, you can have Toyota replace teh frame, although I think some are just being "bought" back and totalled, but I've never done it.

If you don't like the gold color (who does?!), just cover it with mud and dirt (or plasti-dip), and no one will know... :D

It has billie 5100 all around and bridgestone revos on AAR rims. add in the smoked out headlights, signals and markers. Best truck I have ever owned. The winters here in MA can be pretty tough, and I have to be up at the crack of dawn for work, so often times it is before the plow comes. With this truck, I never have a problem getting out or maintaining traction. Never had to use the locker, and 4L maybe once or twice. with 125,000 miles it still has lots of life left.

I read somewhere that the 99s that were TRD didn't come with a locker.
That's the debate I've been having with mine ever since I bought it.

1999 TRD Prerunner std cab 2.7
I have the skid plate, factory stickers (replaced with Sockmonkey stickers) and the beefier suspension from the factory but no locker. :(

I love my truck but I'd probably sell it to you in a heart beat if it wasn't exactly opposite of what you wanted. haha
