4lo REDUCES the load on everything before the transfer case by 2.57x or 257%.

The stock tow package wont help much .... 4hi and actually playing in the dunes you are gonna be essentially in 1st gear the entire time.... you will see trans pans temps of 240* before you know it if you stay in 4hi.

Seriously, 4lo and let her rev, also manually shifting and sticking in the lower gears and higher revs will help immensely.

Hell at the beginning of nov i was at pismo and this dude in a new FJ with a 6speed was stuck, and SMOKING the crap, im talking PLUMES OF SMOKE out of his clutch. I went down and asked if he was in 4lo, because it was obvious he wasnt. He flipped to 4lo and was able to idle out of the hole he created and he goes, oh I thought it would make it harder..... *facepalm*

100% disagree with above. Staying in 4LO 1st gear the whole time is a horrible way to enjoy the dunes. Keep it in 2WD and follow the info I stated on the 1st page and you'll have heaps of fun. You can 100% enjoy the dunes and not wreck your truck going a little fast, you just have to know when and where. Like I said before, reserve 4WD and 4LO for when you start getting stuck, and then you won't. You also teach yourself how to cruise around on the dunes in 2WD and know which routes to take that have the smallest risk of getting stuck. Once your stuck in 4LO, you better pray someone comes along to get you out.

Im not saying in first gear im saying take control of your trans by using the gears and not just leaving it in drive. I play around in 4lo 3rd gear quite a bit, if i left it in drive it would like to climb to 4th n 5th and would have to downshift before being in the meat of the power to rail a bowl.

If you really want to play in the dunes, in pismo out back, its SO much easier in 4lo, just point, shoot, pedal down and walla you are where you want to go without getting stuck in the middle of some weird spot in 2wd. Done many a tank of gas out there and never once been stuck, just gotta be smart about your driving. I have pulled many a stuck 2wd truck out / seen 2wd trucks get pulled out.

Again, OP probably doesnt have wide 285+sized tires, or LT, or a supercharger. 265's aired down, 4lo and some revs will be OP's friend.

But hey what do i know, have fun continually getting stuck / putting yourself in some shitty situations in 2wd, or having a lame experience on the flats.

I was aired down at 15 and then 10 to see if I could (and did) make it up a very steep dune and had a blast out there. FCCEA243-376E-4D0A-8775-9005117D3A32.jpg

Agree with the last couple of posts. 2wd is fine for a good part of that area but when you get into the softer steeper areas 4lo all the way. Like above no this doesn’t mean 1st gear- more likely 3rd. Have fun and no turnarounds on uphill dunes unless you have enough speed to slide the back end around but I doubt that’ll happen. And whatever you do don’t speed on the beach or cross the stream on high tide.

@nd4spdbh @VolcomTacoma well if I get out there maybe Ill do a little science test! We all have our ways that weve grown up with its all good. I might have my ultra guage, but if not my obdII scanner reads all my temps including my tranny. Ill try both, and make sure to be cautious and watch all the temps

You have the Offroad model so that helps. I occasionally take my OR to the Juniper Dunes and air down to ten psi (265/75-16s load range C on stock TRD OR wheels). Turn off the side curtain air bags, figure out the traction control buttons, and make sure your locker is working. Aired down that low you will loose some of what little clearance you have in the front so expect to scrape a bit. And our breakover angle sucks so avoid climbing dunes with sharp breaks at the top. Bring traction boards if you have them and bring two shovels. That way one of your buddies can share the joy of digging if you get stuck. :)

yuppp all packed. I got 285s so a little bigger contact patch. Worst case scenario I have my maxtraxs, snatch strap, tow strap, winch, and shovels. Pro tip if you have more people than shovels the others can use the max traxs to as shovels!!!

Nope. When I was down to 10 psi I took it easy on making turns but aired back up to 15 after that

There is a cool FREE place to camp not far away on a ridge line. Google TV Tower Road. Caught a killer sunset and the next morning an equal sunrise.
