    I call BS on that.

Every person I know or every ford i have dealt with or owned has had transmission problems.

Ford is a POS I would never own one again.

Meh, Tacoma is great in the snow off road and in general; but my front wheel drive accord with studded tires trumps it for highway control. I know it sounds crazy but If there is a lot of ice on the ground without much powder the truck just spins its wheels.

I don't want to highjack this thread but yeah.. in 79 and years after that the trucks they made were high quality tough working machines. I would buy an old one any day. The new ones they are making, however, I think are way overengineered, every couple years Ford comes out with some new revolutionary shit that is amazing for the first few years, then it starts messing up and costs alot to fix.. They just need to spend more time on making what they have better instead of just making new stuff all the time. Like the new ecoboost, right now I think its pretty nice everyone loves the thing! But I'm just waiting... waiting for that fail after a certain amount of km.. there has to be a downside to all this extra pressure and stuff.

I could go on but.. yeah moving on.

Back in the day - yeah, Ford made some good stuff. I'd love to get my hands on a early model Bronco. But I've had both good and bad experiences with Ford. My first car, a hand me down from my father, was a 71 Ford Pinto with over 200,000 miles on it. It was a POS as far as cars go...but the thing just kept running and running so I can't complain there. My first new car was an 87 Ford Festiva. That turned out to be a bit of a POS. It seemed to always have some kind of mechanical problem. The EGR valve was always going out on it. Got rid of it after just three years. In 1994, I ended up with a new Ford Ranger Xtra Cab and had nothing but problems with it. I'm not sure on the mileage but it was in 1997 - the transmission burned up. The reason? Because Ford was super cheap and used rubber plugs to seal up three holes on the top of the case. These plugs dried out and caused transmission fluid, over time, to be lost without me even knowing it. The guy that did the repair even said it was a poor design on Ford's behalf. He punched aluminum plugs into the holes - the way it should have been done in the first place. Unfortunately, the transmission never worked right after that. I had to take it back to him twice because the 2nd gear fork was defective and I could never go into 2nd. We ended up moving to another state shortly afterwards when I graduated from college. When the transmission had the same problem again, I took it to a different shop where we lived. They rebuilt the whole transmission but after that the damn clutch never had any pressure. I'd go out in the morning and push on the pedal and it would go straight to the floor. You couldn't get the vehicle out of whatever gear it was in. On the third trip to the shop, someone pulled out right in front of me. I hit the brakes, the truck went sideways and rolled over. Asta la vista truck. I got a new 98 Ranger to replace it and never had a problem with it. It's unfortunate that Ford has chosen to do away with a mid-size truck. While I like the F-150, I can't really afford it and don't really have the room for it either.

So do I. This is the third dry year in a row for Colorado Springs. My first year here, it snowed at least once a week it seemed and we usually got 4 to 5 inches each time. For the past three years, we've manged a total snow accumulation of just over an inch for each year.

My taco has been through 12-16 inches of snow up and down hills without a problem. The four wheel drive system is amazing on these trucks. The sheet of ice under the snow was a different story tho. I had to put on some tire chains to get back up one hill. Sorry no pictures. P.S. I keep around 200 pounds of sand bags and emergency equipment in the bed and run stock rugged fails.

Late to this thread, but this.

Truck was a couple months old when we got hit with a couple feet here, and it worked out great for me, even with the stock rugged fails. I was impressed, but seen the ABS brought up, and have to agree, not a fan. There has been a many of thread on that.

My Taco went just as good as my Grand Cherokee Overland with locking front and rear axles. I was in about 12 inches of snow last week and was really impressed. I was not expecting the Tacoma to go nearly as good as it did. I drove by several stuck full size 4wd trucks with ease.

I found when I owned my '11 DCLB, it was a machine. I felt very safe and never had any issues with it in the snow. Now that I own a '13 Access Cab, I feel almost as safe. The only thing is that the traction control I find is a lot more sensitive then the '11. I do find it rather annoying. Rather than that I am happy with it in regards to the winter conditions.

When it comes to snow, tires make all the difference. Here is a video of my Mustang with Blizzak snow tires. 4+ inches of snow and pretty much ice underneath.

I have to say that with the 4wd and good winter tires I am also impressed. We get everything from cold deep fluffy snow to slushy/salt/sand goo and the Taco has not let me down.

One question though. Sometimes when my '12 is in 2wd and the traction control system kicks in I hear a sound like a small motor operating, or a small air tool. Its not the "crunching" sound that the vsc/abs makes, but more of a whirling sound. Anyone know what this is?
