Well.... Ackerman turned me away! Said they probably can't get my truck on their lifts. (Didn't ask how much it weighs or anything.. just looked at it.. said, I don't think we can work on that)

Previous owner of my truck only had service done at dealers.. SO... I know all along the west coast, I have invoices from Alaska, Canada, Oregon, California, Mexico... All toyota dealers.. All able to work on this truck...

Oh well.. I'll stop by MT Schiele and Fairway auto tomorrow.. Or, I did talk to a few techs at the chevy dealer I work at, and they might do it.. BUT.... One time I had them change the oil in my honda.. A month later my transmission blew up. Honda says it's because whatever fluid was in the transmission was NOT honda transmission fluid.. And, on my car the engine oil drain is in the same general area as the transmission fluid drain.. But, even tho I've worked there for 20 years at that time, no one would admit to doing anything wrong, so I had to pay to fix my car they ruined. but.. None of those people are there anymore.. The current set of techs all seem pretty good.. Bah. I don't know..

Honestly... I don't see the issue. My truck is covered in those things.. (I've got 4). They're completely sealed. No vapor release or anything. They bulge when going up mountains. Got to manually vent them.
People mount them on top, right over their heads. The rear is common, but that's just a few feet away from the door on a little jeep.

Most things aren’t an issue until there’s an accident or something goes wrong. Like all the people that mount high lifts just waiting for it to become a projectile.

Hey guys, I know it's a long shot but I started looking at 2nd Gens and found this one. (https://www.carfax.com/vehicle/5TFLU4EN5CX034556) I just wanted to check here to see if anyone knew the truck and if so, any opinions on it? Otherwise, would greatly appreciate any insight into what kind of stuff might be beneficial to look out for? I know crawling under and looking at the frame for signs of rust but I'm not the most mechanically inclined person so if there were some tips from folks here, they'd be greatly appreciated before I pull the trigger. Would love to get back into a Tacoma but don't want to buy one that causes me pain in the long run.

I can't really help.. Other than, rust, and make sure you don't see any major grease stains on the undercarriage which could indicate a torn boot or bad ujoint or something.
But wow, these trucks keep their value, if that's a good price. I started thinking about selling my 2012 honda car, and I could only expect to get about 5k.. Not worth selling, because it's still in perfect shape.

I did interrogate them about why it's been on the lot so long and they mentioned that the ujoint and one driveshaft was replaced. I also asked them for undercarriage pictures and they sent these over. I plan on still taking a closer look if they tried to capture them at good angles. I personally didn't think anything was particularly concerning from these and some of the research that I've done on the forums here. I appreciate the insight on grease stains on the undercarriage as well though! It's one of the better prices I've seen on a crew cab w/ 4wd.

That frame is freaking mint. I wouldn't worry too much about a torn CV boot or a bad ujoint. They're not that hard to replace

Right on, thanks man! I don’t drive too much and these puppies seem to go forever so 140k didn’t bother me too much. I just wanted to make sure that I was aware of things that may come up around that point and try to prepare myself mentally. Honestly, I should have never sold my 3rd gen but here I am and I just want a taco back in my garage.

Just really check the C channel part of the frame under the cab. Toyota thought layering metal was a good idea so that is prone to possibly separating

Well, didn't come away with her tonight. It's still on the table but wanted to look into some stuff some more relative to tick/knock/rattle. I had a 2019 before so a hell of a lot newer than this vehicle. The cabin seemed much louder in the 2012 and under acceleration, I felt like there was a noticeable vibration. (experienced this here and there with my 2019 but not to this magnitude) The other thing that I noticed under acceleration was that it sounded almost as though a door panel was loose either right next to me or behind me and was just smacking around. It was hard for me to pinpoint whether it was coming from the front of the truck or if it was something in the cabin. Overall, I just didn't come away from the test drive with a warm and fuzzy so decided to look around here some to see if I could find any videos or accounts that were similar. I really want to get back into a Tacoma but I just wanna make sure it's one that's gonna be in for the long haul. Sad times tonight :(

Check my build thread...too much to list.
sounds like it still needs some fixing. Vibes probably from needle bearing. Other rattling could be worn out parts. Anywhere from ball joints, shocks, carrier bearing or even ujoints they didn’t bother to change. In the end it is a 10 year old truck so it’ll have its quirks. In the end if it didn’t feel right I wouldn’t buy it. Lot more trucks out there. Keep looking.

For sure, if they come back and offer to lower the price some more, I'd make serious consideration to it but I plan on checking one out at Lou Fusz and another at Dave Sinclair (this one is a little more than I want to spend but looks pretty clean).
