Have you cycled them at max draw to measure the heat produced?

Not exactly but I have run a 500w light off them and that made them hot enough that I didn't want to pick them up with my hand.

Not much, just an hour to get there. Truck won't be getting much driving outside of wheeling anymore; so the mileage will be good for it.

I think I have a claim up there this coming week I'm shadowing. I might drop by on my way back and see how it is.

Imagine all that heat in one bundle of batteries inside your truck. I would think that temperature cycling them would be very detrimental not only to their continued performance but also to their physical integrity.

500w (Aprox 42A) is a fairly heavy load for a small 7AH battery. They seem to hold up well in the UPS they are meant for with short load cycles as high as that if not higher. They tend to last in an UPS under heavy use about 3-5 years. They don't heat up much at 10A, at 7A or less the heat is negligible. With 8 batteries that would be 80A... If I'm under 1A/battery it would last all night. But then 8 batteries is a lot to deal with...

Maybe just getting one bigger second battery would be better... hmmmmm... I'll have to think about this some more.... Thanks for the input G.T., heat wasn't something I had put much thought into until you said something. If you have anymore thoughts on it let me know.

My worry is they would catch on fire and reduce your baby to an insurance claim. What’s to stop you from using them as part of a rapid charger for laptop/camera batteries and the like?

I’m struggling with battery issues myself. I have two behind the drivers headlight and I’ve come to realize that it isn’t the best arrangement for me. Sorting out what to do and when I figure out where to put them I’ll be investing in allot of battery cable as I am quite certain that they won’t be under the hood anymore. Plus I want to make plans for a third “house” battery for the future camper arrangement.

I'd be more worried about the wiring to the battery then the battery its self when it comes to fire. That is the main reason I was planning to run less then 10A/battery. Eventually I'd like to have dual batteries in the truck and a 3rd or more "house" battery in a trailer. I like the idea of going out somewhere remote setting up a base camp with a trailer and then go wandering either on foot or in the truck. I don't want to haul a generator and fuel for it around If I don't have to. So solar and alike for additional power would be cool.

I'm headed out early in general. Just set my alarms for 630. Will probably nope out pretty early to get back under some cover for the probable hail in the afternoon.

Renegade update: Couldn't make the hill climb (no low range) and overheated the clutch in the process. Owner plans on trading it in for a wrangler

I imagine there are lots of people that have traded those in with regret and frustration.

I swear, whatever suspension he had on the front, part of the coil over was hanging over his tire.

I’m also happy the clutch smell of the Day wasn’t coming from my truck with my gimp leg.
