Just know that Mark Twain lake/state park is different than Mark Twain national forest. Mark Twain lake has a nice manicured campground with good fishing but no trails and barely any gravel. Mark Twain National Forest is broken up into a couple dozen parcels across the state, some hours away from each other, with various amounts of primitive camping available. In general, MO doesn’t have a lot of fire road/out of the way opportunities compared to mining states in the east or mountain states in the west. We’re mostly flat farm ground or populated areas.

Random stranger jumping in here from AZ. I've been offered a job in St. Louis, reasonable pay (high $60k range). I have never been to St. Louis, is the area worth considering? My other open offers are in Hampton, VA and Springfield, VA. Any insight anyone can provide is appreciated.

St. Louis is a pretty great place, things to look forward to.

-East STL is rated deadliest city in America per capita
-Bridgeton is about to become a Nuclear fallout zone
-We live right on top of the New Madrid fault which is overdue for a quake
-Fenton, MO becomes an island every Spring from flooding.
    -The Hockey sucks here
-No formal drivers education so obviously everyone is an excellent driver.
-Our Governor just resigned due to some pretty scandalous activites (granted the charges were dropped)
-We are one of the only states that requires it's residents to pay Personal Property Tax every December
-During the summer months you will need a SCUBA tank to breath properly from high humidity

Hope to see you soon!

Back off of East St. Louis, that one is ours. And only Illinois has two consecutive governors doing federal time. So neener neener.

You should never plan a trip to any state in the south east during summer then. They have legitimately super nasty humidity there. MO and IL can't compare...

Even with my personal firearms and my LC having a snorkel it sounds pretty dangerous. I wouldn't live in actual St. Louis, which suburbs have reasonable commutes and lower crime? The actual facility I'd be working in is right on the river behind the big rail yards.

I lived in Hampton 8 years ago and I've visited Springfield a few times, St. Louis is the only one I'm not familiar with at all.

I live within the city limits. I've lived here for nearly 15 years with no issues other than some asshole neighbors. There are some good places. You are responsible to pay an additional 1% earnings tax for living or working within the city limits though.

Well... that is a very negative spin on STL. Not at all how I would describe it. Any city you can tear down and point out the negatives. They all have them. I can't personally say what city life is like but there are plenty great suburban areas that have a lot to offer. Free... there are many free family hot spots that I have yet to see another city offer. (Awesome free zoo, museums...) the cost of living is relatively low compared to the rest of the country. We have all 4 seasons... sometimes all in the same week. It's a good town. I would focus more on the job personally. No different than you are moving now for this job, there might be another one that takes you somewhere else. My 3 cents

People get frustrated in St. Louis because it’s not a gun free safe space utopia like Chicago.

St. Louis is much better than Kansas City in my opinion, and light years ahead of Springfield. STL has the best MLB team in the country, the best free zoo in the country, the best Italian food west of the Mississippi. The pizza is weird. That’s about all you need to know.

As a native Texan, I've never had to pay state income tax, so this and personal property tax is very strange to me. I'm used to just paying taxes on my home and federal taxes. I'm hoping to be in an area where neighbors aren't going to be close enough to be a problem.

I prefer the burbs. I figure every city has its problems, Tucson definitely does.

I try to avoid the urban life, I'm 29 and will be looking to settle down at some point, just need to find wife #2 and make sure she's a keeper this time. Decent schools, safe neighborhoods, and a house with a big garage are important. The job has potential for growth and relocation, my end goal is to get back to Hawaii. The only potential downside is that it pays at least $10k less than my other job offers. The cost of living is also higher in VA, I'm just not sure how they balance out.
