Ok, I can answer all this as I have experience with virtually your whole post.

I own a 17 DCSB OR 4x4 Auto bought 12/16. Had TSB done on tranny for shift flair form 2-3 upshift. TSB fixed it. No unusual shifting otherwise. Had leaky rear end, dealer tightened nuts, no more problem. Had rear end whine, had TSB done with leafs replaced and dampeners installed, 90-95% fixed. It's now no noisier than any other rear drive vehicle I have ever driven. I have a Mexican truck, but all these problems exist in the Texas made one as well. I had an FJ that was made in Japan and it had even worse problems so the Japan aspect doesn't mean much to me. Any Toyota plant anywhere has Toyota engineers overseeing it anyways. Sometimes you get a bad one. All of my Tacomas problems were addressed during regular service appointments, they did have to order the leafs and dampeners, that took a day to instal.

Mostly my truck is sorted now at 20K miles, I do have squeaky brakes and my windows rattle. I will get those addressed at some point. Also CC absolutely sucks with the auto, I almost never use it.

Overall it's been a good truck and i'd buy one again.

OVTune makes Cruise Control awesome. It holds gears and better RPMS through the whole range and the MPG bar sits at the top when cruising 60-75

I'm sure it does, but I can pretty much use my foot and save $800. Also if I use S5 and cc it's not bad. I just prefer the mileage I get without cc.

If you like the truck and it feels good to you then get it. Don't live in fear. Those that are already looking for problems tend to find them.

Haven't owned a 3rd gen but I've had a 1st gen and two 2nd gens, all solid trucks. Overall I don't think you can go wrong with a Tacoma.

I had a 16 limited. Put 40k miles on it. Crashed the hell out of it. Just bought a 17 sport and loving it. Hope that helps

Every vehicle can potentially have issues, regardless of reputation. Go test drive and see if you like it. If you do, buy it. If not, don’t.
