TACUNDRA - 5.7L 3URFE swapped 2nd gen project

Discussion in '2nd Gen. Tacomas (2005-2015)' started by MikieSwartz, Jan 13, 2019.

?

Will I end up with a functional 5.7L Tacoma?

  1. Yes. I watched you're video and I have faith in you.

    37.8%
  2. Probably. I mean, you already have a whole Tundra for parts.

    41.1%
  3. Maybe. If you're a Toyota tech and have an engineering degree.

    14.3%
  4. Probably not. If it was possible, other guys would already have it done.

    7.6%
  5. No. You're blowing smoke or you're delusional.

Just watched it! Really enjoying the series. Sorry if it’s already been answered but what’s your plan with the gauge cluster? Are you going to adapt the tundra wiring to the Tacoma one or use the tundra gauge cluster?

That is a good question. I really want to keep the stock cluster. I thought I was going to be forced to use the Tundra cluster if I wanted the 4x4 indicator lights to work because the wiring diagram calls the wires CAN BUS (or something like that). So I figured that meant it would send a digital signal to a processor in the cluster. But after farther investigation, I'm pretty sure it's not a digital signal - just the same 12v switched wires the Tacoma uses.
And I've never tried to make a stock 6 cyl tach work with an 8 cyl engine before, but I found this tach signal converter that has good reviews and seems to work with just about anything. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/dak-sgi-8e

That would be super nice if it’s 12v. I’ve always dreamed of doing the 5.7 swap and just imagined I’d have to integrate the tundra gauge cluster. But I’d personally use the 3rd gen tundra cluster because it’s nicer looking lol.

Do you think that the Tacundra build would have been easier with a 2wd truck?

@Bobby18 That was probably from my old channel (where they blocked all the comments). I pulled most of the videos down and reposted on the new channel WhipBash. https://youtu.be/UJTZscv8lnc

Sorry for the long wait. I have done a lot of work but haven't taken the time to edit any videos! I finally took a break from everything else to make Tacundra 28. More episodes are already filmed and coming soon. Thanks to everyone watching and commenting! https://youtu.be/UUe3btCylNc

I am sure it has been answered before but real talk. For the amount of work, money, weight, etc....why not just ls swap the taco? It doesn't really seem as if the iforce swap is straight forward at all. For that much work?

I'm a true Toyota fan and I know a lot of you are... Honestly, I just wanted to boost the 4.0 V6, but the 5.7 Tundra V8 was easier to tune (with HP Tuners - at the time). So I decided to go all-out - Toyota power!

I have been going WAYYY beyond an engine swap. I'm dropping the engine as far down as possible for low center of gravity while lifting the transfer case up for high clearance. Also, sliding the cab back to get more weight on the rear axle, keeping the suspension as long-travel as possible and keeping as as much of the factory Toyota stuff working as possible.
