TACUNDRA - 5.7L 3URFE swapped 2nd gen project

Discussion in '2nd Gen. Tacomas (2005-2015)' started by MikieSwartz, Jan 13, 2019.

?

Will I end up with a functional 5.7L Tacoma?

  1. Yes. I watched you're video and I have faith in you.

  2. Probably. I mean, you already have a whole Tundra for parts.

    41.1%
  3. Maybe. If you're a Toyota tech and have an engineering degree.

    14.3%
  4. Probably not. If it was possible, other guys would already have it done.

Haven't seen the 3ur-fe put in a Tacoma, but there was a sema truck with the 4.7l v8 2uz-fe swapped in. It also was an access cab short bed, which is super cool.

A guy I know is putting a 6.0l lq4 in his 1 tonne SAS taco, which is pretty sick

The whole Tundra cost me $3900 so far. $3,000 for the bid, $550 in auction fees, and about $350 in fuel to pick it up. I think the rest of the cost will mostly be time. And driveshafts - Although I may be able to make stock driveshafts work for now, I don't expect them to hold up.

That is certainly going to be the tricky part! I have only started to look at wiring diagrams to see what looks similar or different.

I know of someone who's swapping a 4.7 into 2nd gen. I guess the transmission on the 4 cylinder trucks bolts up with an adapter plate to the V8.

Just watched the video about the front carrier/skid. I like it. If you are replacing the front bumper, you can also cut off that hanging piece that the factory skid bolts to, and gain a bunch more approach angle and clearance there

I'm definitely interested in seeing how this comes together.
As for the wiring; I gotta think that both motors will have most, if not all the same wiring. Differences being connector type(s)and pin out. Let's say the ecu connectors are the same... It could be just comparing the wiring on the connectors with a schematic for each to make sure the wire identifiers, not the colors, on the schematic match for each. If not, remove from the connector body and insert into the correct opening.
    Just a thought....
Good luck with this endeavor and i look forward to seeing the results.

I haven't had any problems with them yet. I made a jig and lengthened them 3.5". Unfortunately that was before I started filming the build. I should have some pics from the process though. Oh and I ended up angling the uniball up a little to get an extra 1.5" of droop ( and 1.5" less up travel) cause I wanted it to sit high. With a little preload, it stands at the same height that the 6" fabtech lift was at.

I've always been a budget-builder. I'm investing a lot more into this truck than I normally would. Still, I've only invested about $20,000 including the price of the truck. I paid about $4500 for the truck from salvage auction. That number will go up when I add the 5.7 swap.
Yeah, I did cut that off when I made the bumper. :)

I'm expecting to use the Tundra engine harness and possibly swap some plugs and move pins from the Tacoma harness. Honestly though, I haven't even looked at it yet. I'll post this kind of stuff when I come to it.

I'll probably re-build my front bumper someday though. I'm not thrilled with it.
