Sounds like a problem with the Trailer Wiring, not the hitch wiring.

yeah, I'd be willing to bet that somewhere along the trailer the insulation on some of the wiring has worn down and is making contact with metal.

Thanks for the feedback. I believe it is the hitch wiring because this happened with two different trailers and boats. I think I will take it in to the place that installed the hitch and wiring and see if they can track down a bad wire of connection.

Cut the brown(ground) wire to trailer and that should do it!

I didn't catch that it was two different trailers...

Yeah I think they got something crossed up in the hitch wiring...

Well, today while convinced the problem was in my trailer wiring I went to the hitch and wiring installer. They are a reputable outfit. They searched the wiring under the truck, could find no questionable areas. We decided to replace the wiring assuming the "brain" was bad. I was only charged for parts. The work was complete I went home, made a too quick visual inspection of my trailer, hooked it up and immediately blew the fuse for the tail lights. Now I assume it best to replace all the the trailer wiring for the trailer here and do the one up north the next time I am there. Does anyone think it could be something else?
Thanks. getting poorer and still can't use my boat and trailer.

It could still be possible to have two trailers with shorted wiring... I would give it a look. Do you own a Multimeter of any kind you could check for a short to ground in a few minutes on the trailer wiring.
