part of the harness has heat shielding. So, it may be important to get the right length kit.

You're absolutely correct, totally forgot about the shielded portion of the cable.

I need to get mine done before sun down and in not sure where the cable is to be tied to. The video I found says follow the body harness back but I can't see any wires on the passenger side under the truck to follow. Do I zip tie to the frame?

I would follow along the frame as shown and zip tie it where you can in that location.

It’s odd I think it’s the power outlet that runs in that location from the rear.

Lots of zip ties. I didn’t use them all, but used enough and made sure the wires were secure.

Just get the wires secured where they are above the frame and protected from branches, tall grass, etc etc. my harness was on the passenger side, but if it wasn’t I still would have ran the wires in the same spot.

    I watch
Sr5 does not have the power outlet so that there explains why I didn't have the wire harness videos said was there. Those people all had TRD.

At any rate I got it up there and out of the way of anything moving or where it can catch on anything. I mostly kept it in the upper edge of the frame till i was past the rear wheel and muffler, then over top the tire carrier frame to where it meets the other harness. I'm not pleased with how a few of the metal straps aren't on to hold it down firm. I was having a lot of trouble working with them by hand because my truck was all fluid filmed last fall. Greasy hands and those don't mix so much.
I'm going to let it be for now maybe try to by some of them metal straps at the auto parts store. Redo and add a few. Taking the spare down I think will provide more room to work.

The lock works good I'm happy now that my tailgate or stuff in the bed is more secure.

Meh, you don’t need all those metal ties. That wiring isn’t going to go anywhere. You could probably use four plastic zip ties the entire run and it would be fine for the life of the truck or actuator. As long as it’s out of the way it will be fine. I love it. I rarely lock my topper, but it’s nice having it halfway locked all the time. A thief would be in a pretty compromising position crawling into the bed of my truck to check the bag and locked/secured gear trunk in the bed behind the cab lol. I don’t think many would want to climb-in to even look.

@Tacoma091919 I have one of those metal straps left. Maybe I will try to get it in there good later. I really don't think it's going anywhere. And I will cut the one i cant get tight so it's not rattling around.

I have the Lomax hard tri-fold tonneau cover. You have to open the tailgate to get open with out damaging it so this will keep the bed more secure.

Ok party people, got mine installed today after sitting on it for a week. Super easy to do. Thanks for the recommendations on the OEM kit.

So here's my problem... I don't have the tailgate key. Bought the truck used a few weeks ago and didn't know it was supposed to come with a separate key.

First, I want to make sure this kit still works with the key. I read in other threads about the aftermarket solutions no longer working with the key and people needing to install Paracord as an emergency release. Is that still a requirement with the OEM kits? I'm assuming it does but you know what they say...

Second, if I'm gonna buy a new cylinder and key, do any of you know the difference between the lock with anti theft vs the one without? And which can I assume the truck came stock with?

    No money
OEM kit still works with the key.

That key is just a plain key, no chip in it.

If I may make a suggestion, visit a locksmith and ask about getting a key made to work with your cylinder. I would think that Toyota could handle that also.

You might already have the key. If you have push to start some years didn't come with a special tailgate key. There should be a key that pulls out of your fob to unlock the door if the fob battery dies. That key should open the tailgate

That's my plan. Just figured out today what needed to happen so still pricing everything out to figure out what's the most cost effective option.

I do have the push to start, however the key that pulls out of the fob is only for the door and the glove box, according to the owners manual (and to me trying those in the tailgate before reading said manual). The tailgate has a separate key entirely, unfortunately...

the 12 dollar actuator and wires i already had on hand worked and continues to work for me. Some people are ok buying the "kit" for 100+ but just know you have alternatives that work for a fraction of the price.
