That’s cool and all but the few I’ve tried all tend to bind up with the oem support cable. I was thinking of cutting and crimping some steel wire and using that in place of the support cable seeing as it’s still being held up, and the OEM one on the opposite side will still be there.

I don't use any cables, struts or spring or any combination of the three. If you don't mind me asking, what year is your truck?

Is the kit you have exactly the same as the one in the picture you quoted? Mine is a little different as it is attached to the side of the tailgate. I did run into where the cable would run into the shock. I removed the cable from that side.

+1 for the @christian06 kit. It’s awesome! I can have some 3rd gen comfort without having to downgrade to a 3rd gen.

Can someone explain the point of this? I gently lower my tailgate with the same hand I unlatch it with. Never even think about it so it's not inconvenient or a hassle or anything.

Hands full of crap, open latch with finger, keep stuff in hands, once open then place stuff in bed.

also for tonneau, don’t have to wait and guide it down, can open a flip back tonneau immediately.

last, more civilized. Third gen tailgates are just nicer to open than second gen stock tailgates because of this dampener. Not much can be done about the handle differences (I wish there were better aftermarket options) but the soft open is quite nice.

I’m sure most would not consider the juice worth the squeeze though.

my ‘02 Tundra is the one truck I own without a dampener and I really notice.

The same reason you put over size tires, wenches, luggage racks, lights, stereos, and numerous other things you don't really need.
    Because you can.
    Cheers

I offer a partial kit that has everything except the dampener and dampener bracket, or a full kit that has everything.
The reason for the partial kit is you might be able to source those 2 pieces cheaper than my dealership. You'll need the 2017 to current ones.
If you have any more questions please feel free to send me a pm and I'll doy best to answer them.

In addition to what others have said, it's not a necessity, but a nice to have. You can "click" it open and let it go. I also have young kids who are now tall enough to catch the corner of a lowered tailgate, so having it come down slowly also gives me a backup measure in case I open the tailgate and one of them comes zooming around the truck.
