I've been looking around the interwebs for a while now and I can't seem to find a tailgate handle with the backup camera for a 2005. I can easily find them for 2009s and up, but nothing for earlier 2nd gens. Does anyone know if one of these tailgate handles for 2009s and up will work on a 2005 - 2008? If there's an aftermarket version out there that will work, I'd prefer it since my head unit is aftermarket and I don't want to deal with OEM wiring harnesses. I've also heard the OEM camera leaves much to be desired.

I also want to add a power lock to my tailgate. I'll probably go with Pop & Lock's PL8521. Any thoughts, good or bad, on this?

For a back up cam look into a VCI-CRVCC or a VCI-CRVCB. Both are made by PAC. They have held up very well on my dads truck. He has had it on there for about 5-6 years now and no complaints. This is a license plate frame but you can still see everything behind you and even your hitch. It has a very nice wide view too.

Thanks for the tip. I'd rather have one that's built into the tailgate handle, but if I can't find one for a 2005 I'll probably go with one of those PAC units.

    Just bought it!
    Any luck Riverdog?

I originally thought I wanted one built into the handle just to keep things clean, but the more I thought about it, I pictures all the times I've hauled a ton of stuff and had to leave the tailgate down. I haven't been able to see behind me and a backup camera would've worked wonders. If it was in the tailgate handle all it'd be showing you is pavement. Mounting it by the plate would let you see no matter what you're moving.

I'm sure you could buy a factory one in the handle and make it work. It'll probably fit in with zero modifications too.

Only problem I see with it, is you may scratch the lens when you reach for the handle.

I found this one a little while ago, but its $209. So I put it off for now. Its a Pop and Lock with a camera. I like this option because I have a lockable canopy. Currently, I can open the tailgate (with a little extra force) with the canopy locked. So I'm always weary about leaving anything in the bed. I'll probably go with this one after the holidays are over.

I almost never drive with the tailgate down (maybe once a year or less) so that shouldn't be an issue for me. I agree that a license plate or bumper mounted camera is a better location. I prefer the look of it in the handle and can deal with not having a backup camera the one time a year I drive with the tailgate down.

I thought about this option as well. I looked at it for quite a while actually. But wiring the stock camera to an aftermarket deck isn't something I'm totally comfortable doing. An aftermarket camera, however, will just plug right into my aftermarket head unit. For me, its worth paying a little more to save on installation time.

I had not thought about scratching the lens though. I would think there would be some kind of anti-scratch film on all backup cameras. But at the same time, it wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't. You know, cost savings and all

The tailgate handles all fit 05 to current. I had one From an 09+ in my 08. The camera in the Tacomas are 6v cameras though, so you have to wire it up as such. Fit is flawless, you just have to tap your reverse wire and run everything

got the OEM handle w/camera on my 08. love it whenever reverse parking or backing out.

I'm going all out on the tailgate lock. So I ordered this from Pop and Lock, PL8540. It's their brand new combo kit that's about to be release. Comes with the PL5400 with a codeable bolt lock so you could use your ignition key. And comes with also power lock.

If you don't mind having the powerlock than I recommend the PL5400, which you can already order.

Now you have me thinking about switching things up again. I'd really like the convenience of a power lock on the tailgate. And it would be great to be able to use the ignition key.

Since the PL5400 doesn't have a camera cutout, what are your plans for a camera?

The PL5400 does have a camera cut out. Works with or without a backup camera.

I went with a license plate bracket backup camera by Alpine...
