I would think a gas strut would not even come close to fitting in that space.

I’ve added 1/8” tail gate seal (to keep dust and water out) and it’s a tight squeeze. And that’s with the seal compressing.

I think giving this some thought the only practical way would be attach the hydraulic parts to the inside of the bed. If you really wanted to have this option it could be fabricated .

then of course the bed would need reinforced to attach the hardware plus keep it from spreading apart .

At this point may as well do things correct go with an electrical hydraulic pump and real cylinders that would allow you to dial things to do just what you want.

    Interesting project .

likely why they don't make a kit.
I would say its a lost cause.
Get a tailgate plate and some bed stiffeners and call it a day.

it all comes down to what a ton of money and fabrication means to you.

Then if you go with all new parts or used.

I designed and built and installed many hydraulic systems over the years this would be rather simple for me.

Want to get real high tech operate with a remote instead of a simple switch

Though the fancier one gets the more expensive things get.

Because it is a one off design you as the end user need to have the skill set to troubleshoot and repair.

Everyone else would be completely clueless.:annoyed:

Look at the information on your existing Gas Spring for how many pounds of lift and match it with a unit on Amazon. Been there, done that.

You're trying to open and close your tailgate with one hand while holding your Starbucks double espresso (extra foam) in the other and without breaking a nail.
