To the folks doing walk arounds EVERY time you get in your truck... do you really think this is common? I get it if you are coming from a commercial industry where you do a daily check of your truck and trailer, forklift, excavator, whatever, but I bet 99.9 percent of people don't do this with their personal vehicles. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, just saying it's unrealistic to expect that because you do it, everyone does or should.

I try to when hauling a load in my truck, or my camper or trailer. Mainly checking straps in case some idiot came by and loosened one for funsies.

    4 run, 2 don't
OP keeps forgetting to close their tailgate

Proceeds to insult others by implying they don't use their truck like a truck

I can’t wait until it’s mandated by the feds to have a warning that your tailgate is open.

At least my truck isn’t so retarded that it reminds me that there might be a baby in the backseat even though it has no backseat.

    I drive a Miata.

I love the work that everyone puts in to avoid walking ten steps. Let's put all the mental effort and justification into fabricating an alert flag, because I can't be bothered to walk a single lap around the truck.

    Good Lord.

And in case you ask, I'm not always diligent about walking unless I'm in the field. I walk it every time if I'm off pavement. Tree branches and rocks exist. :burp:

Maybe the OP can reprogram his backseat-child-reminder to an equally stupid check-your-tailgate reminder….? Where’s Meso when you need him

Tie a piece of string or rope to the tailgate and feed it through the rear window. Give it a good yank when you get in the cab and if you hear it close then you're good, if you don't hear it close then you're also good. Win win.

You can set the camera so it always shows the 360 view of the truck when at a very slow speed or when stopped or parked before you pull away. That would help.

So you’re going to remember to check your mirror for a crappy looking diy flag, but won’t remember to put it in reverse?
Sounds like you’ve already made up your mind… Be sure and post pics of this duct tape flag so you can go from being roasted to flambéed

This happened to me once. Turns out the linkage for the lock was dirty. Just pull the inside panel and lube it up

Buy an orange magnet, place it on your driver’s door when you get out. Walk around the truck and remove the magnet when you leave. After working for a utility company for over 40 years I still walk the long way around to get to the driver’s door.

    Work in progress...
I was thinking, back when I was cleaning swimming pools, how did never leave the tailgate down? Every time I took something out I put the tailgate back up to help keep the tools and supplies out of sight. I don't know, I have a very distracted memory but I was managed not to dump my equipment down the road somehow. I was joking about the light but yeah I think you should seriously wire up a warning light or buzzer to alert you if you keep leaving the damn thing down. Tools and equipment is expensive, not to mention knocking out windshields etc in the tailgating vehicles behind you.

Could remove tonneau (and install a trukbox)

maybe just remove the gate and install a cargo cage thingy

    flatbed or long travel

4runner and cut out the rear cabin and relocate rear window to C pillar
