Are the troughs the same on the 2nd gen as well? I could get relatively accurate measurements on mine if so, to make a model with.

Ive given this a fair amount of thought. I was thinking that getting some concrete stamps, then pour the liquid into the tailgate panel (removed from the truck and placed on a flat level surface) then placing the concrete stamp on top while its curing. This would end up giving you a stone texture on it.

The only issue I am seeing with this though is that many materials that could be used would rip very easy. I want to test out a few materials to see what is strong enough, but still soft on the knees.

I just asked if anyone on our local Buy Nothing FB Group had any of the foam pads available, and YUP! I want to give this a try. Now I can just order some of the VHB tape on Amazon and I'll be well on my way!

Excellent idea. Now all it takes is someone with a water jet and an accurate file drawing to market it as a DIY kit

That would definitely be the most cost effective way to "do it right". Water jetting foam works really well.

The only issue I see with foam is, they'd need to sit proud so that when they compress they're flush. If they start out flush it seems like they'd only help minimally

A cast using the existing TG skin with thick VHB would work for this. But, there would be some small gaps around the edges.

I could live with these gaps if it keeps the price way down.

    LoL! TG is tailgate. Sorry!

VHB is the very sticky 3M foam tape that we would use. It comes in various widths and thicknesses. Depending, you can also double the thickness as it really sticks to itself well. Don't do that by accident. There is some shown in the Products box below.

You COULD cast directly into the tailgate plastic and ideally (maybe) have no need for an adhesive if you used like an 80A Shore rubber cast. An example process could be: Remove "tailgate skin" in question, mark off existing mounting holes (ear plugs maybe)(or, bolt with a stack of washers or a bushing to make a thru-hole cavity once cast), drill a 0.201" hole an inch or so from each end, drive a 1/4" socket head cap screw so the head is OFF the bottom of the trough, but also below flush with top surface (or pan head, or whatever you feel is adequate), pour in casting material, let harden, remove the washer stack/bushing previously put in, this will allow access to original tailgate skin mounting holes. Now, the rubber sections are held in place by 1 bolt at each end of each trough, via the bolt head that's in the middle of the cross section... Hopefully that makes sense.

GRANTED, we're talking about 2/3 a gallon of cast material. Probably close to $80 or so...

Some extremely clever and compex suggestions. The OP @vecdran has created a very attractive solution for the "FUCK, OWW" problem.
Here is a much less elegant and simpler, cheaper, and quicker approach:
    MATERIALS: $8.99
    Gorilla Tape (around perimeter)
    3M VHB (under edges only)
    TOOLS:
    (Very Sharp) Utility Knife
    Roller
    Straightedge
    HF TailGate Pad.jpg
This installation on a 2000 PreRunner with an aftermarket Bed Liner. It adds a small factor of sound and thermal insulation. (Cheap Home Depot door handle and red strap facilitate pulling the tailgate closed from inside)

    ANOTHER APPLICATION,USING $8.99
The 4-piece anti fatigue foam mat set can be assembled as a square and also as one long rectangle. Three pieces in a rectangle, with a cut-out for wheel-well can be placed as one-half of padding for the floor of the 6 foot bed of the truck. Two in that form will cover both sides of the truck bed floor. Use Gorilla Tape on the seams on the underside for a more permanent construction. Also adds a small factor of sound and thermal insultation.

Take a look at my photos in the first post. The VHB is enough to get them to sit proud. A casting would be the same.

This may work as well? Cheap option from harbor freight. Just have to use a box knife to cut to size but the good thing is the adhesive is already there.
Nice job OP, excellent idea for sure.

Yeah you’re probably right. Just thinking of inexpensive ideas like the OP. However,
I think the OP has this idea nailed pretty good.
