I have the Bedrug tailgate mat which has held up great but is much thinner and doesn't have the molded in ridges that the Bedrug itself has. I think the OP's idea would be a great addition.

When I will get to it I'm thinking of placing a sheet of checkered (some places it's called threaded or diamond plate) aluminum on my tailgate. It will still not be knee friendly but will have no ridges and be non slip. I got left over from another project...a 28' Motorhome done entirely of the same material.

I finally got around to doing this mod today. It was a bit tedious (there's 16 of these things!) but it greatly increased the comfort for both kneeling and sitting on the tailgate. I only used three short pieces of tape on each one since the Bedrug mat covers them completely.

Last Friday I went ahead and did this mod to mine as well. Ordered the yoga mats and tape, cut it all out, etc, makes a huge difference.

When I installed my bed rug a year ago I took pipe foam and cut it in to wedges then a ran gorilla tape over them. The bed rug covers it up. It’s nice and flat and easy on the knees now. My mod wouldn’t have worked without the bed rug though.

Just wanted to report in that I've done a fair amount of standing, sitting, and putting gear on top of the tailgate, and the foam still looks great. Since it's flooring tile I guess that's to be expected.

I’d vote this the most creative and functional mod of 2020. Bravo. Great idea.

If I hadn’t already got a Mountain Hatch, I would do this.

That’s not comfortable at all. It’s hard rubber that’s hurts your butt.

I think it's a great idea, and you probably could sell the inserts online. It looks like a pretty easy cast, you could surface them either the way you've got yours or with a finish to match the existing tailgate. Add a strip of 3M tape and charge market. If I didn't have a piece of marine board velcro'ed to mine as a worksurface I'd try it.

I was going to slice up the other 5 pieces and offer them in the BST forum. I just haven't gotten around to it.

Heck, it would even make a nice comfortable box mat too!
