I just purchased a 2017 Taco Limited and I cannot find the max load of the tailgate. I searched TacomaWorld with no luck. Can 3 adults sit on it?

I could not find the load rating anywhere. But yeah, I load dirt bikes with no issues and have sat 2 adults and a kid on my tailgate. No issues at all.

I was also wondering this same thing for hauling my motorcycle. Only way it would fit would be tailgate down.

I've had 400 pounds on mine without breaking it. My previous vehicle had a 300lb static weight limit for the tailgate and only had 1 supporting cable.

My dealer looked at me like I was an idiot when I asked them what the max load is. They explained there isn't a max and if I broke it its my fault. I've also had 3-500 pounds on mine. Every once and a while it should be fine, but I need to do it almost every day. I will no longer use the Tacoma tailgate until I can find someway to reinforce it. Using a tundra in the mean time, but it is honestly not much better. This was surprising as we've never had this problem on any of our other trucks.

Bed seems fine just the tailgate flexes and bends going to try to get a metal plate made for it to replace the plastic and see if that helps.

Even with reinforcement of the tailgate itself, that will just prevent it from bending....A rigid tailgate isn't useful if the mounts snap off.

On the past it was the tailgate that bent first.

I think the official max weight is zero. Toyota does not rate the tailgate to hold more than its own weight. I don't think any tailgate has a rating. That's why they all easily come off for loading heavy items.

I've put a 28 cu ft fridge on mind loading it up from lowes and unloading.

I wouldn't be too worried about the mounts snapping off. The support cables attach with some pretty serious bolts to the strongest parts of the tailgate and bed. If you are loading things that heavy, it would be best to look into aftermarket options. The above mentioned tailgate reinforcements should allow any reasonable item to be loaded into the bed.

I had stupid amounts of weight across mine, dead center of the gate and never had a problem. Six 12' sticks of 3" square x 3/16" wall tubing bouncing down the highway. That's about 600 lbs.

    Awesome, I'll check them out!

A little backstory, we sell machinery and most is delivered via a ramp attached to our tailgates. In the past we have owned GM products, a Titan, and a Ridgeline and this is the first time we've had tailgates actually bend or flex. My request is not at all unreasonable as the Chevy and GMC were used for 10 years each doing this same thing on a stock tailgate and never a problem. Titan and Ridgeline not as long, but still no issues. I am more surprised though that the Tundra tailgate is so weak. Sort of expected the Tacoma to be.

I believe the first gen Tundra had problems but they were corrected with the second gen Tundra.

The 3rd generation Tacoma tailgates are supposed to be stronger then the 2nd gen.
