Hello TW, I have a damaged tailgate and it is much cheaper to buy a used tailgate on OfferUp than getting it repaired. Does anybody know how to swap the lock cylinder from my current tailgate to the new one? Thanks in advance!

you can probably remove the lock cylinder somehow. There's probably a clip or something like that, that will hold it on. However, it's tied into the whole black handle assembly, which is held into place by 2 bolts. If it's not damaged, it would be a lot easier to just swap out the whole thing versus swapping just the lock.

As in swapping out the whole locking assembly unit?

Is that pretty straight forward to swap?

Maybe I’m getting old and cynical but with the popularity of stealing tailgates it seems more than likely you’d be buying a stolen one.

I recall seeing an ad for one and the seller said if the color wasn’t right he could get the right color. Sounds like theft made to order.

It’s my understanding that the VIN or at least part of it in on the tailgate somewhere. I know that on some of the gun forums there is a place to post stolen gun info. Perhaps the same could be done here.

that's not a bad idea. Preemptively put a special marker or code on the inside of the tailgate and take a pic of it. So if u ever find it on OfferUp you have proof.

Well, the advantage with using the firearms serial number is that any legitimate buyer aware of the site can check the firearm against the list of stolen. More than a few arrests have resulted.
