After almost two months of ownership, I still can't believe the ridiculousness of having a separate key just for the tailgate. If it just used the same key as the driver's door it wouldn't be such a big issue, I don't know why Toyota decided to go with a completely separate key. Has anyone looked into whether it would be possible to replace the lock cylinder with one that matches the driver's door?

Don't use the key. Add a hose clamp around the base where it mounts, it won't get stolen that way.

I did thought they used the same key however. My buddies 2016 Tundra uses the same key as the doors. Figured that was standard.

Adding a pop-a-lock and using the fob seems easier, and maybe cheaper, to me.

Yeah and it's probably the route I'll end up going down, just wanted to know if anyone considered this one first.

How would you do that? Never heard of that before but that sounds very interesting. Would love the tailgate to work off my fob

Just search for pop and lock on this forum, there's tons of posts about it.
