Is there really NO alternative to the pop n lock? It's overpriced, and has so many crappy reviews.

Am I missing something? I want to get a lock..but I don't want to spend 50 bucks for something so simple and notoriously craptastic.

What are you protecting in your bed? I have. $1300 ARB Fridge and $500 worth of camping gear when I go traveling. $70cad is a small price to pay for a little more security.

I will too have a bunch of gear and stuff, but my point is that there are a bunch of reviews all over of them being unreliable, cheap, just bad, etc.

How can there be no other alternatives?

Well, this is an official +1 for PopnLock. Easy to install and works great. Again, worth the added security. Before buying, I also envisioned some type of strap across the rear of the bed with a cheap lock. Maybe be a bit "ghetto" if the cost doesn't seem justifiable. I am not aware of any other brands.

I just bought the lock. I think it will work. I just have to grease certain parts to ensure they move smoothly from lock to unlock. I am looking for a tailgate lock, anybody have any suggestions? The one that prevents someone from stealing the tail gate.

you could rig your own lock with either a popper or a pull cable release hidden under the bed or use a cable from a big car they used to pop the truck with and route it into the cab

I think this is what you're referring to, check this out: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tailgate-theft-how-to-prevent-it.27829/

I was thinking something like this, too. Like some kind of level like the hood/gas door release. How would this be accomplished.

Anything on a pivot could be made to work but to keep it unlocked the lever that operated it would have to be a two position and not a spring back type like on the hood since there would be nothing to stop the lever in the gate from returning to lock position. just a simple lever operated sliding bar, much like the lock on shop overhead doors but driven via a cable. Even if I ran the cable to the cab I would still put an emergency pull somewhere under the bed in case it failed
