I have a 2016 Taco but did not receive the tailgate key. Since Toyota screwed up royally on this, I cannot get them to sell me a replacement. I have tried giving them the VIN and nothing comes up in their system. I have also given them the number off of the cylinder and they say they (2 dealerships) cannot get the key from that.

I think I can drop it off at a locksmith and they can take the tailgate cover off and make one that way. Does anyone else know how I might be able to get the correct key?

If not, I will go aftermarket and look for an automatic lock so I am also looking for recommendations on those.

TIA for any info/assistance on this!

FYI - The 2016 is the only year that the tailgate key was different than the door key. I have also looked under the console lid were the clip is that is designed to hold it.

Why not buy a tailgate handle/lock cylinder assembly for a 2017+ and have a locksmith change it to match your master key?

I don't have the p/n handy, but the add-on power lock kit from Toyota for the tailgate is plug-n-play. Takes about an hour to install.

The dealer that I spoke to about that said the OEM power lock was discontinued. I like the 2017 idea, I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the suggestion.

The OEM tailgate key is of a weird design; it is not a standard type key with teeth. I can't find anyone who can cut me a new key.

Here's the part number for the tailgate lock cylinder for your '16, comes with two keys. Looks to be about $65

The R4T one works swell, also plug and play. Very easy install, takes about 30 min - definitely my most useful mod to date

Tried my tailgate lock yesterday for the first time after reading about tailgate keys. Stuck my ignition key and it worked fine.
    Is yours push to start?

Yes, it is PTS, the 2016 is the only year on the 3rd gens that had a separate key for the tailgate. I bought mine used and it did not come with a key, so yea... Lucky me!

The dealership quoted $480 to replace it, so aftermarket here I come. I know about the pop and lock and the one posted above, anyone have any other suggestions?

Swear the stealership stole my key, juts called them to quote and it’s $99 for the core and the key and $125 to install.

I also have the 2016 with PTS, then the tailgate has a full size key & the glove box opens with the hidden fob key.

Man that sucks! A lot of differences even within the 3rd gen and we're on to the next one.

I was dealing with this when I lost the tiny key from the fob of my push to start. They are called “laser cut” keys. I wound up sending pics to an eBay seller who cut and sent a replacement fob key.
So that’s an option if you still have a key that works and you can take pictures of it

Is your tail gate currently locked?
If not, I would order the lock/key set from the above post.
If it is locked, you might have to remove it from the inside which might cause a little damage to the tail gate cover but still be cheaper than that crazy dealer quote.

Get a pop n lock and call it good. I've had mine in for several years and love it.

    Thanks!

I do still have the key. Did you use this Ebay laser key cutting service provider?

Another dealership quoted $480 for an OEM auto lock installed. My concern with the aftermarket auto locks is that I do not have a key. I have a metal tonneau cover and I'd be screwed if the auto lock failed and I do not have a key for back up.

That’s the one! I had the little key plate with the code that comes with the keys from the factory, but for whatever reason the seller said that wasn’t sufficient and so I sent pics as well. Ordered two and they both work and fit in the fob

If you are going to install an after market lock yourself just get the OEM one from Toyota.
It took me longer to get my tools out than to actually install the lock. OEM kit is plug and play. About $150 or so. The price the dealer gave you is probably tacking on two hours labor for a job that would take less than 30 minutes.

While you got the lock out you should upgrade to an electric lock, don’t even need to use the key after that. (But still should get it fixed in any case, electric lock or not)
