Tailgate not opening

I have narrowed down that my left latch is not working properly on the tailgate. The clips are a witch and break way too easily. I hauled four loads of rock in the bed one day and now it is not working correctly. Anyone have this problem before and if so, what was your fix.

 

My left latch was been kind of funky ever since I installed my pop&lock.

What works for me is that I give the tailgate handle a little smack (as you would when a tube TV is going fuzzy) and then I can usually hear a click immediately after. I also noticed that it functions better if you push the tailgate in (towards the front of the truck) and then try the latch.

This might be my wonky work-around. But maybe it will help
