For those who have done the tailgate reinforcement mod, what product did you end up buying? Looks like most go with either the Mobtown or Relentless offerings. Is there one which is particularly better than the other? Thanks in advance!

Go with either one. I beleave I went with Mobtown along with end cap.

Relentless full skin. anything else is subpar as the whole thing needs to be reinforced not just the center and not just the cap. I went with the 14awg steel and its beef, makes for a proper tailgate now and have zero issues.

I haven't purchased one yet, but I'm going to go with Relentless. 1 piece construction for more strength and rigidity, and it's actually $10 cheaper than Mobtown if you buy the matching end cap to make them comparable.

Your '15 has a stronger tailgate than earlier 2nd gens, so be sure it's something you need for your function rather than just installing it because it's available.

It adds a fair amount of weight. Which is fine if it's needed, a nuisance if not.

If I needed one I'd go with the full skin type also.

Completely agree with your statement about is it really needed. I would like to be able to load my bike (650lbs) or a quad. Anyone with a '15 who would know if my tailgate is strong enough for that weight?

Will the factory plastic skins fit over the Relentless one piece?

They're very similar. I got the Mobtown one on a deal with the cap piece.

I have the Relentless full skin on my 2015 DCLB. When I took my tailgate apart, it didn’t look any different than pics of prior models, which is to say pretty flimsy looking. I wouldn’t count on the 15s being stronger than prior models.

The factory plastic skin on my 15 fit over the Relentless model just fine - no issues.

I have never loaded a quad or bike in my bed, but had no issues with my ~425 lb mower with me on it, so 650 lbs was no sweat.

the top cap wont, but the main fiberglass piece of the inner tailgate will. Looks factory. if you want pics of the relentless one let me know.

I went with the Relentless aluminum option. It's VERY strong. I know Toyota did something to beef up the gates in the later years but when I removed the factory plastic, it sure as hell didn't look stout. This should be one of the first mods for a 2nd gen imo.

I would actually like to have the tailgate supported but I have loaded up my 1100 Shadow in the bed several times without and no issues yet.in the bed.jpg

Soooo, what is different about the '15 tailgate? If you order a new OEM tailgate shell, do you automatically get the stronger tailgate? The inside pic above looks just like my '06

on mine the tailgate feels rather wimpy... I should get a brace for it also... I do think my bike is about 100 pounds or so lighter than yours.

I would add reinforcement for that.

I have a 2015 long bed. I've run a full size quad onto my truck, no problem with the stock tailgate. If I had the short bed I wouldn't rest the quad on the tailgate while driving though, too flimsy.
